Had a lot of stuff come up this year, so I think I’m too late to start my own sweet potato slips. I live in zone 5b. I ordered slips in the mail last year from Annies Heirloom, but I wasn’t too impressed with them and a lot of them died. I was thinking of buying some off facebook, but I’d have to drive minimum 70 mi to pick any up. Nurseries don’t carry them near me. Anyone have suggestions?

I buy a sweet potato from the store, and toss it into a pot. It sends out lots of shoots that I break off and plant into the garden. Sweet potatoes love hot weather, and don't really grow for me before June.

That's what I do too. I might put the pot in a bucket and soak it in water for a bit (in fact lately I'm using a tetra-pak with the side cut off, I put it in there, add dirt, soak it for a few hours and then take off the lid and let it drain). It usually doesn't take long (remember to keep watering every so often).

Sweet potatoes rot every time I try to sprout them. I suspect it's either 1) too cold in my basement or 2) some sort of treatment on the potatoes.

I wanted to do that, but I was afraid I didn’t have enough time to do slips. I read it takes 6 weeks and so that would mean not getting them in the ground til early June. What are your thoughts?

Early June is honestly fine for zone 5b. I've started slips from shop-bought sweet potatoes in April and they were ready to go out by late May, early June. Just stick one in a jar of water on a warm windowsill and it'll start shooting in a couple of weeks. The slips grow fast once they get going.

Yes, but probably not until June, which should be fine. You don't want to plant until it's hot.

I'd also vote for Sand Hill in Iowa -- they're doing a lot of great stuff.

I did this about a week ago and it is already sending out tiny roots. Hopeful.
