9 Years of True Experience: Replicating Authentic Terra Preta
Hello everyone, my name is Pavel, I am 71 years old, and my background is in low-voltage and medical electronics production. In 2016, I became obsessed with replicating the authentic Terra Preta.
As a practical man, I push technical challenges to the limit. And so it happened that I replicated it 9 years ago, and ever since, I have been gathering hands-on experience using and managing this soil processor in our Central European climate.
This soil system runs autonomously, which is personally crucial for me.
I am currently battling polyneuropathy, losing sensation in my feet, and I know that in the future, I will be confined to a wheelchair.
With this future outlook in mind, I later designed the following system: Terra Preta + the very special scale of liquid ferments and extracts that completely eliminates the need for hard physical labor, digging, plowing, or hauling heavy manure and compost every year. My outdoor tomato plants grew over 3.5 meters (11.5 feet) tall and I harvested them from a stepladder.

Furthermore, Terra Preta can be fertilized in completely different ways, and a 20-liter bucket is basically enough for me.
No manure, no compost—and this EVEN applies to all other types of garden soil.
The only difference is in the concentration, and everything will be described down to the last detail in my upcoming e-book on fertilization.

I believe in absolute honesty and raw data. I have compiled my entire 9-year experience and field journals step-by-step into a comprehensive 15-chapter manual of 36 pages of text plus additional pictures, and I will do my best to release it right here on the Permies Marketplace by the end of October 2026 to help you bypass years of trial and error. What I am working on now:I have almost finished the blueprints for the second stage. I am testing advanced, completely odorless liquid ferments that undergo precise neutralization to protect sensitive plant roots from extreme low or high pH. This system allows you to elegantly recharge any kind of garden soil from a comfortable sitting position, with zero heavy lifting—the only difference is a slight adjustment in the dosage.

Do you have bush honeysuckles where you live, especially Lonicera morrowii? I had different nerve issues a while ago and they helped a lot (bark, twigs, leaves) but it might be worth trying anyway. It is not a remedy that people have used widely.

Hi, thank you for your support. My problem, however, is a “hardware” issue—specifically, calcified discs. I guess only God can help with that...

And I didn’t get to work on it until the moment I was absolutely certain that that was simply the way it was. That certainty was absolute and unshakable. I have very keen instincts, believe me.

I devoted about 9 months of intensive study to researching Terra Preta.

And here's what's important: It works—and it has been proven over the course of 9 years [1.7, 1.9].

I think that we are all trying to make practical trials on what we think seems to work. If someone doesn't want to call it an experiment, I am ok with that.  I like the work that you are doing.  We can share the results and methods with others and it provides insight into possible ways of living and growing better.  I don't care what people call it. I'm glad you are doing what you are doing.

Thank you for your supportive words. However, I want to clarify why I strictly do not consider this an experiment.

My 9-year results precisely replicate what is traditionally said about authentic Terra Preta—with two crucial, logical exceptions:

first, it absolutely must be fertilized because it is no Perpetuum mobile.
In the Amazon rainforest, it has a continuous, massive input of organic matter 24/365, resulting in constant, rapid decomposition. We simply do not have this natural tropical engine in Central Europe or North America.
Second, it generally does not increase or maintain itself over time on its own in our climate.
Although, to tell you the truth, during the extraction of TP from the fermentation pile, I caught a glimpse of something remarkable: in one case, the powdered biochar actually began to penetrate the wood chips... it literally started to petrify them. That was incredibly interesting to observe.

On the contrary, I have achieved the most important thing: my process provenly and demonstrably converts the input organic matter into permanent, stable HUMUS. The structure of my soil after 9 years in the beds is absolute proof of that.

I openly invite anyone who doesn’t believe me to come to Prague and see it with their own eyes—(at their own expense, of course, HAHAHAHAHA!). Everyone is welcome.

Thank you for sharing your experience.  I've always wondered about the statements that Amazonian biochar replicates itself.  Your comment that you saw biochar penetrating a wood chip is intriguing.  Do you have a picture you can share or more description?  Was the woodchip becoming biochar, or transforming into a different stable form?

To answer your questions:

First, about the picture of that specific penetration: it has been almost 10 years, and of course, I tried to photograph it back then. But try to shoot a clean micro-detail on a broken piece that is only about 0.6 inches wide with a standard camera so that it actually makes visual sense.
I am sure I have that old photo somewhere deep in my archives.
The problem is, I have absolutely no idea where that photo could be right now, but I will look for it and let you know.
However, to give you a clear picture of what we are dealing with here, I am attaching a photo of how this black mixture actually looks in reality when I mix it in my wheelbarrow with a shovel. You can see the structure, the carbon-humus mass, and the fresh biomass working together.

Second, what I saw back then was a clear penetration of BLACK color into the wood profile of the chip. It was a freshly broken piece of a small branch inside the structure.
I can't say much more about that specific visual detail.But what I can say is that the main mechanism of transforming wood chips into sustainable humus is actually different, even though this penetration phenomenon might be connected to it. In fact, those solid pieces of wood chips later completely disintegrate into a loose, powdery material—which is exactly that STABLE HUMUS.

I honestly don't know for sure, and I think no standard laboratory is ready for this kind of research. Everything today is examined strictly according to established guidelines. The moment those guidelines are missing, scientists back away because they don't want to deal with things they know nothing about. And I simply didn't have the tools, money, or academic knowledge for that level of tracking.I will let you know if I manage to dig up any of those old photos!

I just went straight into my old archives because I wanted to show you the exact context.
It's a small miracle that these photos even survived.
I couldn't find the exact macro photo of that single charcoal-penetrated twig, but I found the original field photo from the moment I was digging into the structure.
As you can see, it was absolute chaos in there—a dense, chaotic mix of mature biochar mass, roots, and organic matter. Finding and cleanly focusing on one 0.6-inch piece in that environment with a basic camera was nearly impossible.But I wanted to send you this right away so you can see the exact, raw layer where that twig was discovered.
This is how the real magic looks under the surface!

ANNOUNCEMENT: Important Terminological Update (Charcoal vs. Biochar)

Hi everyone,
I want to make an official clarification regarding the terminology I used in this thread.Due to a language barrier, I have been using the word "charcoal" in my previous posts.
In my native Czech language, we use the exact same term for both - grilling material and agricultural carbon, and it never crossed my mind that this could cause a misunderstanding in English!

To prevent any dangerous misunderstandings: I NEVER MEAN commercial grilling briquettes!
Whenever I wrote "charcoal" here, I strictly meant pure, raw lump carbon created through high-temperature pyrolysis with zero additives.
I now know that in the English-speaking agricultural world, this pure, high-quality carbon matrix must be called BIOCHAR.
I will make sure to use the correct term "Biochar" from now on.

The Briquette Illusion

Hi everyone,
I want to clarify one more funny visual illusion for you.
When you look closely at the photographs I posted earlier (especially the one with the shovel), you see dark shapes that look exactly like standard commercial grilling briquettes.
Let me tell you clearly: It is an illusion. Don't be fooled!
These are NOT grilling briquettes AT ALL. What you are actually looking at are, literally, pieces of horse manure coated in stuck-on biochar dust. Their shape and color might lead you to think that they are charcoal briquettes from a supermarket after all.
For a better idea, I am attaching another field photograph below.
This photograph beautifully documents the exact transition state – the process of mixing and transforming the horse manure pieces with the biochar dust, just right before the final processing.

'Charcoal' is not really an error. We use the two terms interchangeably. Charcoal for grilling in the US is usually compressed coal dust plus a binder, though charcoal from wood is sold.

I consider biochar a kind of charcoal. You will find there is a lot of variation in terminology.

Since English is your native language and I am just a non-native speaker trying to navigate these waters, I might sometimes miss the exact shade or cultural context of a word.

To be completely honest and put things into perspective: I learned English in school when I was 15, attended the Hillside School in Havana, Cuba for two years, and have been completely without practice ever since.
So, to be safe, I use AI to help me—otherwise, I would probably be in much bigger trouble!  (SMILE)

Therefore, I think my e-book would definitely deserve a thorough review by a native speaker before its release.

I am truly glad that everything I write is clear and understandable.
My only goal—especially in my e-book—is to describe how Terra Preta truly all is and how it functions.
I want the general public to get to know my findings and learn not only how to produce Terra Preta, but also how to "operate" and maintain it.
Because in specific conditions that are so different from the Amazon rainforest, it unconditionally requires specific handling, as I mention in my notes about liquid ferments.
