So we have been playing around with different icons over at this thread but it was getting a bit hectic and confusing so I decided to start a new one because we finally chose one but we need to decide what we want our main color to be.

I like the concept but not the execution. Right now it looks like a creature with crazy eyes and a big mouth more than overalls. Back up and show the legs. If you're paying for these, change of color alone shouldn't count as a "new design."

I agree, I thought it was a startled looking cartoon face. The snaps are the eyes and the straps are the ears. The pocket is a jolly mouth.

Maybe, if the overalls were denim colored, even with the typical yellow topstitching and if the background was white and maybe a wider pocket across the front, the cute, crazy critter image would fade......

Thanks for the feedback everyone.. But yeah, I don't know what we should do..A few people have brought up the fact that it looks like a demented creature.. But Paul chose this one out of like a hundred different ones. Did you have a look at this thread? Did you like any of those better? I mean ultimately it is paul's decision but no one was really commenting on that other thread so I was just curious..

i think as long as the bibs are white the critter image is going to emerge. Dickies bibs have a much larger pocket...no chance of it being mistaken for a mouth and the button holding the straps is much smaller than the ones in the icons....maybe could be left off all together. I think one of the main identifying characteristics of overalls is the indigo blue color.... they don't all have goldish top stitching but almost always are shades of indigo. Maybe if the background is white it can have an outline that will make it stand out on the page. I don't know what is possible or appropriate for icons, just fairly familiar with bib overalls. I'm gonna try to post an image.

I think that one is better. Try it all the same blue, with & without the outline and the creature may vanish. Or just loose the pocket.

I don't think you'd be able to tell what it is without the pocket. I will try though.

I agree that changing the size/shape of the pocket could make a big difference to the 'creature effect' for me.
Most adult overalls I've seen have a pocket practically as large, and the same shape as the bib.
It could just turn into a demented, yelling creature though

maybe 'the problem is the solution' just go for a permie monster.......
one more try for the bibs.......using this computers paint program that i don't have much control with.......
i don't know how big the image will be........and it might look like a teletubby

What about if I rotated the second overalls I drew at an angle and changed the coloring and cropped the image some?

I notice that maybe with just the bib strap fastener and not a pocket, the image might be recognizable. with the fastener and pocket maybe still a critter or tv image. I did find IMGUR and the resizing option........I did not learn how to slant something at a jaunty angle though as in all of the others:)

Dave, paul didn't like the whole overalls. I believe that is the only reason we are not using them. BUT I really like the ones you posted of just the top half with the colors I suggested. I will direct paul to this thread and see if he likes those.

You should be using a vector based program - not pixel based - unless you want it "pixelated."

I just wanted to dip my toe in the water..........no more patience with sitting at a computer trying to make a line go where I want it to with my finger..........thanks though, Cj, for the tip.... maybe this winter I will try to find out what a 'vector based program' is ...isn't there just a button to push somewhere that will smooth those 'pixely' things out?

I hear ya. If this was winter I'd consider working on this but it's not a summer time project for me.

FYI, a vector based program renders your drawings mathematically. So a circle isn't bits (pixels) but a "circle" that can be scaled up with no loss of quality. Like a letter isn't comprised of bits making the image of a letter. An "a" is still an "a" no matter what font, size, color, case, and so on. Not sure if that explains it...

Might try some vertical overall stripes ala railway engineer overalls to reduce the critter confusion factor. Going back to the beginning of the thread there seem some likely candidates.

A favicon may only be seen at a 16 x 16 pixel size, and max resolution is 48x48, for those who have suggested it being done as a vector file.

For vector graphing, I used Pages (document creator for Macs) to create the drawings I just made and the ones for the pdc I took this summer. The reason I used Pages is because it was already installed on my computer and easy to work with. After making the drawing, I printed the screen to capture an image, and I rotated the drawing into place with GIMP. Lastly, I resized the image online with PicResize.

Similar to how one can draw in Pages, Microsoft Word can be used for creating nice sketches, too:


On Google Chrome, Vector Paint is app for vector drawing, and here is a quick demonstration for that program:

It does not require any downloads to run the program.
For more information, Vector Paint's "Help" button at the right of the top left corner explains many of its features.

Some downloadable vector-based drawing software that runs on Mac OS, Windows, and Linux include:

Inkscape is one of the most well-known of these programs.


Scribus is another neat one to use.


Synfig seems pretty nice. The most interesting thing I found from the tutorial is that Synfig has a very strong engine.


I hope one of these is helpful. If nothing else, I think that just playing around is a good way to learn.

Okay I am not sure if this one solves the creature problem but we have decided on a new overalls icon. Here it is.

Now that we have one picked for sure now we get to have some fun with it, we need it in different sizes and colors and 3D and all sort of stuff so I can either post those here or start a new thread. Whattya think? A new thread might be nice and fresh.
