There are a couple of different methods. This thread might help - https://permies.com/t/31696/tnk/posts-simple

Ok I read the instructions on posting photo images and I did all that. What I have not found is whether I am up against a rule such as:
A-- A certain number of posts required before one is allowed to post images
B-- A certain limit of file size such as the number of kilobytes in the image file
C-- A certain limit on image size such as the dimensions of x pixels by y pixels

So for lack of anyone referring me to a set of rules on this site I will now launch an experiment or two involving resizing the file in hopes of getting it to show up. I will try to keep the image relevant to the previous posts.

And since that did not work I will now reduce the picture even more and see what happens.
And that did not work either.
And now, If at first you don't succeed, just bang your head against the head a little harder This time working in the "old view" mode to see if that makes a difference.
And that makes 3 attempts with no benefit yet from reducing the file size, the pixel count and now even the jpg image quality. And now I have maxed out the limit on number of attachments.

I have also noticed that the preview option when composing a message does not even attempt to show the image.
Also, other website software allows me to click a "place in line" option to locate the image where the relevant text in the message is and I have not seen anything that offers that choice or an extra step to include the image in the message rather than perhaps a link to click on to view the message.

As a good netizen I do try to comply with all site rules on making posts, but being new to this site which is structured in a manner different to what I am used to I simply have not figured out where to find such rules if they exist.

Another possibility that could be relevant but I highly doubt it is that I am working from a LinuxMint operating system, however I regard that as improbable as I have been running Linux for the last 5 or more years and have never had a image posting failure like this. Of course if Microsoft wrote the website appllication, I would not put it past them to sabotage efforts by those of us who run Linux. In fact I would sooner suspect Microsoft than Linux as be the problem, But I more likely suspect some other policy set on this site such as a need for a certain number of posts before image posting is allowed.

Hopefully a monitor of this site will spot this posting problem and unravel the mystery for us all.

Don, are your photos uploaded to a photo hosting site? I believe you need to have your pics on a hosting site in order to post them to permies - that is, you can not post them directly from your computer to permies.

NO

That belief is contrary to the illustrated instructions I was referred to that exist on this site at https://permies.com/t/31696/tnk/posts-simple. At that link there is posted a series of screen shots which show the exact technique that I have used. Everything went exactly as illustrated in those instructions, except it did not work. So I suspect the problem lies elsewhere or those instructions need to be revised or removed. The instructions I found there are an exact parallel to what I have used on several other sites I even attempted it in the "old view" mode. and those instructions ONLY apply to posting an image from the poster's computer and have no variation for posting a link to a photo hosting site.

I suspect the problem is something to do with what information you're inputting to tell the system where to get the photo from, but I'm not an expert on this.

I'll try to get one of the more technical minded staff to help.

I tried using the Attachment feature and it seems to work. I had never used it before! But it does not seem to work with all files. I wonder if it is a file size issue? It does not seem to work with large files.

So I have tried to post the same picture in reduced forms,
The last try was only 29 kilo Bytes. So for my next experiment I have completed filling in my profile and will now attempt the medium sized version of the picture at 152 kB and see if having entered my profile helps any. My suspicion is that I have not yet been granted picture posting privileges because that is a feature that I have encountered on other forums which have a minimum of something like 10 posts before picture posting is allowed. But since I have entered my full profile so that I am better known to you folks perhaps that will do the trick.

Well that did not work either. Perhaps I tried too soon.

Don, rename the image on your computer to test.jpg and try again. I wonder if the "+" in the image name is making the internet angry.

Ok this is the same photo but renamed as "Test.jpg" It is 152.1 kb and measures as 800x443 pixels

Ahah! it worked!. It does not show properly in the in the preview mode, but at least the picture appears when it is submitted
As I said before and add a few things here
-- the N-S ridge roughly follows the white line designated as the cross fence.
-- the high point of the property is approximately at the gate in the cross fence.
-- The E-W ridge runs from where our driveway meets the road up to the gate and thence roughly from the gate to just south of the large clearing.
-- The pond is in the SE "quadrant"
-- The grassy field is mostly in the NE "quadrant"
-- Only the south edge of the grassy field drains to the pond. there is a foot path visible which follows the ridge.
-- most of the SE quadrant woods drains to the pond.
-- The east low point is roughly at the center of the dam which parallels the road
-- The other low spot is at the very SW corner of the tract and you can see a crease in the woods which is a gully that drains there.
-- Behind the house is a bamboo grove casting a shadow and behind that is the sewage lagoon,( tha circular feature is the berm around the lagoon)
-- The lowest point of the bowl is just at the west side of the berm around the lagoon.
-- A very tall hickory tree is casting a shadow which lies along the west edge of the garden which measures 30x30 feet and it is about 80 feet from the garden to the lagoon.
-- This picture is too old to show the garden as I had not yet established it there.

So now we know why my pictures have not been showing. But this is the very first time I have ever seen a site reject an attachment which met the a classic Linux File Naming conventions. Was this written with a Microsoft application maybe?

Don - it might be best to post that information back in your original project thread - https://permies.com/t/52817/projects/water-build-swales#429112

Just because something works on linux, or microsoft or mac, or all three and then some, does not mean that it will work on the internet. Or, if it works on one internet site, will it be guaranteed to work on all internet sites.

I think the culprit was the use of "+".

Personally, I avoid using spaces in filenames too.
