I have a cabin near DuBios,  get up there as often as I can.  Home is in Westmoreland Co,  thgat is where the garden and orchard are.  I did plant some fruit trees at the cabin,  3 made it,  2 died.  No garden at camp,  I can't take care of it that far away.

I'll be moving to eastern Ohio in 6 moths or so. My wife and I bought 20 acres there. It is mostly wooded with an acre open. There is a ton of hard wood on it, a double wide and a garage where I'll build my wheels.

My biggest fear is screwing it up. there is a functioning woodland there. How do you take natural perfection and urge it to make food for you? I guess thats why I joined permies.

We are 40 minutes or so from Pittsburgh. Is there anyone close?

Sorry to take so long to get back. We are in Crawford County, just outside of Meadville, Pa. We move here this past spring. This area is where my wife grew up, but it is new to me. for our first garden here and livestock season things went pretty well, but I have a lot to learn. Any advice on plants, practices and such would be gladly taken.

Central Ohio here. Which ain't technically NE Ohio but we spend a fair bit of time in the Cleveland and eastern Ohio areas as well.

I am glad to see everyone here in this area. We are recent additions back to this part of the world and have a huge dream that we are working towards. I am not sure if we fit the "permie" definition, but we are very interested in a simpler, sustainable lifestyle. We have a home based business, (machine shop, foundry and metal fabrication) but we look to raise the majority of our food from our little farm. I would be interested in hearing of the others in the region and what has worked for you. I have an avid interest in designing and building and would be glad to help others with the expertise that our shop and farm could provide.

I'm in NW PA, not too far from the Ohio line. In fact I grew up living at my grandmother's half the time and she lived only a few blocks from the Ohio line. It was kind of weird. Grandma's house was in PA, but two streets down, the corner store was in Ohio!

that's sweet.. I have land very close to pierpont off 193.... stuck living in the city of columbus for the time being.... that area is known as the pymatuning lowlands... lotsa low lying areas and clay soils... tons of wildlife though...

Sometimes I want to blab on and on about how fantastic this region, including far western NY, is and then at other times I don't want the secret out so it doesn't get ruined. Verbally I say..."Yes, keep moving to Missouri and the PNW."...then think to myself..."Suckers".

we are on 75 acres of woods and recovered fields
working towards a folk arts school and doing understory habitat restoration, particularly at risk wild, native medicinal plants and trees

I am located in NW PA as well. It's very encouraging to see you all on here. I'm well on my way now to developing the first load bearing straw bale house in PA (at least according to the volunteer registry). Planning a permaculture farm/food forest in Eastern Erie County.

Thank you for the warm welcome. I actually used the Ontario data combined with what I've pulled together from the work Penn State did on the Indian Reservation. As of right now I have tentative approval for the building code. I was incredibly lucky to have found such an open minded inspector in our area, he was actually a builder himself and was involved in a handful of "Oehler" style (underground) homes in our area. So far that has been the biggest hurdle was being allowed to build a straw bale structure that is load bearing, we are referring to it as a SIP (structural insulated panel) with cellulose insulation. My inspector understands that is one way around it that doesn't involve a structural engineer. He even said the other day that he wants to see it built and he's excited to see how it turns out. Like I said I feel lucky to have found an inspector such as this, especially after hearing the horror stories about how bad the code people can be at times.

I live south of you in Westmoreland County. I am about an hour east of the Burgh, between New Stanton and Donegal on the pike. I can see the Chestnut ridge from my 35 acre hillside. From what I see from my back yard to Denver Co there isn't anything big enough to be called a Mountain. Its a great place to live. They tell me I am in zone 6a now. I used to always be in zone 5 because of the Ridge. Global warming I guess has changed the zone. My Twp Supervisors are not known to be the most progressive. You might be able to convince them to allow a straw bale house with a strong argument. I don't know if they could rebut an argument like your code guy came up with. Once you have broken the ice it should be a lot easier for everyone else to get it approved. Although an award winning housing plan design was rejected by our supervisors so the property owner built low income housing plan instead. The reason they rejected the plan that won an award for Smart Growth from the state was " Rules is Rules " . So you can see, not very progressive around here.

Just starting the journey. Been reading a lot. Starting to come up with a possible plan of attack for my semi-urban lot (.42 acres which is plenty for one person to manage). Currently taking and online course to get my PDC.
