This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the
PEA curriculum. Completing this BB is part of getting the sand badge in
Food Prep and Preservation.
To complete this badge bit, you must heat up at least 2 cups of grain with a stove top and then let it finish cooking in a haybox cooker. Haybox cookers are insulated boxes that hold in the heat to gradually cook your food. They can be made (
Dimensional Lumber BB for making a haybox cooker) or you can fashion one from stuff around your house. Perhaps a picnic cooler and a quilt.
Minimum requirements:
- you must produce at least two cups of grain (or reasonable substitute)
- you must heat the grain (but not cook it) on a stove top and finish it in a haybox cooker
Provide proof of the following as pictures or video (<2 mins):
- your grain heating on the stove
- unheated grain in pot going into the haybox cooker
- cooked grain coming out of the haybox cooker
- evidence that your cooked grain that is obviously at least two cups
