I had some time today to crochet and thought I'll crochet my submission for this BB. I didn't follow any particular pattern and it turned out a bit big, but oh well, it will still be useful.

I think 10x10 is a bit larger than my personal preference, so I am hoping this tightens a bit with use. It was also a little sad to note how many folx are using the same brand of yarn, just because I believe more companies should be interested in non-plastic options.

One of two projects I did with my textile artist mom during our "Fiber arts weekend" - I also worked on the sand badge pillow BB with her :)

Yarn was "I love this cotton!" 100% cotton medium/worsted weight yarn. I used a 5.25MM hook. Final measurement is 13" square.

This was my very first crochet project, and let me tell you, I have started crocheting up a storm! I'm excited to share more of my projects for future BB's. I have learned so much since I created this project, and I appreciate the motivation this community provided me in getting started with this new skill.

My very first BB submission - I went with something I thought I could do easily=)  I hope I do this right.

I started with scrap yarn I bought at a garage sale - cheap, but 100% cotton (peaches&cream)- and thr Rainbow red I bought from Hobbii (The red in the picture is an 8/4, but the one I'm using I lost the label for but its the same yarn in an 8/.

When I learn a new stitch, I make a washcloth =)  I have several washcloths of very fancy stitches  - since I only buy 100% cotton (or wool) I know these are all cotton, some of varying ages.  We prefer about 7" which we learned through trial and error, so this is the biggest washcloth I have made!  I wanted to try entrelac, which is a different style of crochet, making rectangles and connecting them.  It's a tight weave, thicker than I would suggest for a dishcloth but its sturdy and I like it!

The second row added to the first square. For entrlac, you use a hook at least one size up. You can see my metal hook here, it's a size H/8 or 5.00 mm. The yarn recommended 4.00 mm and this hook is the right size for my tension.

Here is my yarn.  This is a heavy linen that might be used for the warp of a rug or other strong project.   I thought it would have some nice texture for scrubbing.

Those needles are way too big though!   Here I am getting started with smaller needles.

About half done.  I started with too many stitches so I would be sure to have a wide enough piece.  Once I had a gauge of how many stitches per inch, I decreased my stitches per row to give myself a nice hanging loop.

Here is my finished piece.

I love how this feels in my hand.  It is a joy every time I pick it up to wash dishes or wipe the counter.  It is very absorbent, dries quickly and has a nice scrubby texture.

I used 100% cotton yarn with a 4.25 crochet hook. I have been crocheting for about a year and usually make stuffed animals and silly functional stuff to sell at markets periodically, so this was a fun change of pace! My mom was in the hospital this past week, so this was the perfect bit to accomplish while I’m away from the homestead 😌

For years I've kinda had in the back of my head a thought that I should learn at least the basics of knitting at some point.  Finally for this BB I've opted to do that.  So this is the very first thing I've ever knitted.  It started out a bit rough, missing a stitch or two, then growing in size some, but as things progressed I got the hang of the basic knit stitch.  I can still see there is lots more I should learn about knitting if I ever want to make something as "complicated" as a sock!

Anyway, here is my dishcloth submission for consideration for this BB.

To document completion of the BB, provide proof of the following as pics or video (< 2min):
-  Show and describe your yarn and crochet hook or knitting needles.
-  Show your dishcloth in progress.
-  Show your completed dishcloth in a way that documents its finished size.

For yarn I went to my bag of cotton yarns I got a while back in anticipation of doing this BB as well as darning some socks and sweaters.  I ended up selecting the cream colored one.  I got a set of #7 knitting needles for this project as well.  Although I got faster as I went along this still took longer than I originally anticipated.  It makes me all the more grateful for the hand knit socks, mittens, and scarves I've received through the years, not to mention giving greater value to my sweaters (though I'm guessing all mine were machine knit).

This is the dishcloth I crocheted. It started more than 10 inches in width, but got a bit smaller than 10 inches, so I went ahead and added more to the sides (hence the shape). You can see the tools, the process, the finished product, the dishcloth once I added a thing so it could hang from the faucet (thus drying out properly and lasting longer), and the dishcloth in its new home.

Welcome to permies, Lauren! Glad to see that your giving the SkIP program a go, but our expectations about following the instructions and documenting things really well are pretty high.

Please read the general instructions for the Textile program - we're very fussy about using only natural fibers and your material doesn't have a label.  I get that - I've got a few orphan balls of material myself. A burn test, documented with photos, might fix that issue.

Also, when instructions give something like "10 inches by 10 inches", please use 2 rulers in your photo so we can see it's at, or beyond the minimum required. Wonky is totally accepted for this introductory BB, just so long as it's clearly bigger than the minimum and ideally is attempting the right shape.

Please don't be discouraged - after all you've got a very useful dishcloth out of your effort. I use my Permies BB dishcloth all the time.

I went ahead and submitted a post to this thread. It said that the post got rejected because it didn't fit a requirement to be a natural absorbent material. Mine was made of cotton (a natural absorbent material). I probably should've specified better what material I used, but it is cotton. This is my first BB, so I'm getting used to the level of specificity that y'all want, next time I'll go ahead and specify more and perhaps use the way that others specified how they fit the requirements as a guideline for what you are looking for. Sorry for any miscommunication! - Lauren

Have a look here: https://permies.com/t/191957/Wierd-Plant-Fibers-harvest#1584999
If you don't have a label you can photograph, testing will narrow down the possibilities and our experienced fiber people are available to help if you post in the fiber arts forum.

This program has evolved over time, and if anything, we've gotten fussier. Getting the "paperwork" side of submissions up to standards is worth the effort in the long run, but it definitely requires attention to detail.

Regardless of the material, your dishcloth is such a wonky shape, it was unclear to me in the second picture if the whole thing would cover a 10" by 10" square easily. This issue will occur in many BB's, so figuring out good ways to document sizes/volumes is worth the effort up front.
