Yesterday I foraged:
Purslane
Sow Thistle
Wild Arugula
Mallow
Barrel Cactus Fruit
I found these by the roadside, in an alleyway, and the corner of a small park.
I live in the middle of a city, so this is the only "wild" around me, unless I drive far away in a car - which I'd rather not.
I also found this awesome
Urban Foraging Map today!
At first I thought the sow thistle was dandelion, but after researching I found out it's technically
not dandelion but is in the dandelion family. They consider it invasive around here; personally I don't think
free food invading a dry land is such a bad thing.
The purslane is at the end of its season, but I managed to get quite a bit of it.
The dish: I added the foraged ingredients to some steamed potatoes, onion and garlic; I seasoned the dish with some butter, salt, and pepper.
It was yummy! The barrel cactus fruit has a lemon-like flavor, and the seeds have a nice crunch resembling poppy seeds. The "wild arugula" has a spicy mustard flavor. I made the dish again this morning, adding some red peppers and basil from my potted porch plants.
