I used my solar oven for the first time the other day and made two cups of rice. It turned out a little mushy but I'm glad I figured out how to use the oven. There's a peg at the top that you line up with the sun in such a way that it casts no shadow. I also realized that the back patio is not a great place to use the solar oven later in the day because the sun sets behind the house fairly early. Since the rice turned out mushy I saved it and turned it into rice pudding the next day.

A little less than 4 cups water (since the rice has already absorbed some water). I did end up adding more later since it wasn't cooking as I expected.

Partway through cooking. I think letting the lid up probably let a lot of the heat escape.

Note: yeah, I've had a really hard time getting mine to work in combination with cast iron, too
