Question: why does the sign up page say "earn up to 40%" when I know there are opportunities to earn 50% or maybe even more?

We set it all up to default to 40% in the beginning.   In time, for reasons, I moved most of my stuff to 50%.  

Where do I get the links to start sharing?

There is a lot of info about "how to" in the first post of this thread. Did you look there?

When I click on the explore products tab, it lists some things. Several of them are tickets to events in the past. And it looks like I can't page through more options or anything. Am I doing something wrong?

You are not doing anything wrong. It is designed to show top 20 products following a certain algorithm. I think we need to tweak the algorithm to exclude past events and show more products with pagination.

Until that happens, you can go to any product in the digital market, scroll to the bottom of the thread and grab your affiliate link like this:
