Dan, what operating system? Windows? Can you right-click the file and go to Properties, then post with the file size in bytes?

I struggled with this last week, though I think it was just due to overload on the website. Worked great now on PC using Windows 7 Professional, Chrome.

So, here is your first post:

Anne Wilson wrote:I downloaded it twice and THAT worked, but then both times the file wouldn't open...there was an error message saying it couldn't open and couldn't be fixed.

So then instead of downloading the file, I selected "open" the file. This is in Firefox. The file opened just fine, and then I "saved as" it as a pdf to my computer and that one opens fine with Adobe on my computer (Windows 7 if that matters.) Maybe this will work for other who are getting an error?

I originally got the Annex 6 file when this first came out a few days ago by the way. So now I have both - I feel very lucky! THANK YOU!

and then your second:

I dug my non-working version out of the recycling bin and in properties it says the size is 16.5 MB (17,306,272 bytes)

and the size on disk is 16.5 MB (17,309,696 bytes)

So it sounds like you are in good shape. Your solution was to open the file in firefox and then do a "save as" and everything turned out lovely. It is possible that the version that did not turn out well, was the result of the CRLF issue (which I think we have now fixed).

Wacky.

By guess on this is that firefox (or a plugin for firefox) read the file in and then wrote the file out in its own pdf format.

Joao Luiz Weissheimer wrote:Hi Cassie,

Well, as you have suggested on today's paul wheaton daily-ish I tried to download the Ernie and Erica Wisner's Rocket Mass Heater Manual again, just for a test and my results are:

I've done two attempts, both downloads completed fast and the file sizes are the same.
On my first attempt I was unable to read the .pdf. Got a message saying "...PDF document is damaged..." by my pdf reader.
But on my second attempt I rename the file (as rocket) before download it, then the file opens perfectly.

I don't know why does it occurs, but I needed to do the same on my successful attempt early this week. This time I didn't cleaned my browser's cookies.

Both downloads were fast for me.
I'm using Firefox and Ubuntu Linux.

Thanks once again!
Greetings from southern Brazil
Joao

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Looking a bit deeper at both files (on its properties) the results are:
- The first attempt (NOT working) the file name / size is: rocket-mass-heater-manual.pdf / 17,3 MB (17.308.904 bytes)
- The second attempt (working) the file name / size is: rocket / 17,3 MB (17.341.647 bytes)

This is the file size I received and my copy worked fine.

If your file cannot be opened, we need to know what size the file is on your computer. Even if it is exactly the same as mine.

The 2 that won't open from today:

17,329,632 bytes
17,336,932 bytes

The 1 that worked:

17,341,647 bytes

Windows XP & Firefox if it helps

Last copy didn't open after I had viewed it so I downloaded again and got build manual. I renamed it as suggested above and it's working fine, though I don't have the owners manual anymore but better able to build it and worry about maintaining it after

Tried the DL of the Rocket Mass Heater Manual again, it worked this time. I opened the PDF prior to saving it and saved it under a simple file name (RMHM), it opened like a charm. Thank you everyone for the help! (windows XP, firefox, and PDF complete are what I'm using)

The download of Ernie and Erica's Rocket Mass Heater is coming up damaged or in need of repair when I try to open it in multiple PDF viewers. This is tested as of 1:00PM PST.

Hopefully this can be of some help. I inspected the files with the basic GUI "right click inspect files" action and found a few differences between the corrupted and working files.

File size:
17,341,647 bytes (working file)
17,300,612 bytes (corrupted file)

More Info:
Content Creators, page numbers, and resolution information is available for the working file, along with the download link
Only the download link is available for the corrupted file

The broken/corrupted file was the first one to download. Immediately after downloading the corrupted file, I was able to download the working file.

I am using Chrome Browser and on OSX Yosemite v. 10.10.2

Jay,

thanks for the feedback, what time was your first try today? it is possible that your first time was before we made our little fix.

also, what operating system are you using?

also, what size was your unsuccessful file? and your successful file?

Michael Hudson wrote:Well it downloaded pretty quick but was once again corrupt. Same deal as last weeks problem
I have a recycle bin full of rocket-mass-heater(#) files all the same size and all unreadable.

I successfully downloaded it Monday but there was no rhyme or reason to why it worked; same
browser, same cookies, same connection about the same download speed. After a dozen Adobe
Reader errors it finally opened and was readable.

thanks michael,

what browser and operating system are you using?

and you mentioned that all the files were the same size, what size was that?
