It is the low ...neutral...high on the right.

I don’t know if you tried this already but I have sometimes depressed the hydro peddle just a bit and then the range selector easily slides into place. If you have not tried this, maybe give it a shot. If you have tried, never mind.

With my new holland, the range selector will refuse to go into 1 sometimes. The fix is to release the clutch and then clutch in again. Something is not aligning quite right, and after this it's smooth...

A thought: Can you push/pull the tractor, even just a few inches, and try again?

My thought stems from two happenings to me. I have a 4x4 pickup with a manual transfer case. Sometimes it just won't go into 4 high or low from a stationary position, but if the truck is either rolling slowly, or I let my foot off the brake and it rolls under gravity, it will then engage. I have a four wheeler, and if the engine stalls while in 2nd gear, I can't downshift to 1st without pushing it a few inches, then I can get it into first and neutral to restart it. It seems to me sometimes gears just don't line up like they ought to, especially if they have some miles or hours on them.

Is/was it below zero? A friend had a bit of water get in his JD and when it was freezing out the shifter would not work due to ice where it ought not be...

So to me the easy-to-check-off list is finding things that would be physically blocking the gear range selector which you probably have already done. Is there any stick or anything that might have jammed up and be blocking the lever? Sounds incredibly basic but I have had it happen to me and it is super-easy to fix. I recommended the hydro pedals because sometimes the gearing is not meshed up just right to slide between gear ranges. Ideally it should always slide easily, but I occasionally found that if I just moved the hydro pedal I got things moving inside enough so that everything would line up and then the tranny would mesh up and everything slid into place. But you did that. I do like the idea of towing the tractor maybe 2 inches to attempt to accomplish the same. If you can do that, I think that is a good idea and cheap enough.

Unfortunately that is where I start running out of quick-fix ideas. I only ever had one tranny problem and it was my fault, though in the end the biggest expense was towing the tractor to the dealership and back (I had a transmission oil leak from a worn O-ring). Hopefully it is simply a piece someplace that simply stopped in the wrong position and does not want to move. I know that you really don't want to take it to the dealership, but might that be the next appropriate step at this point? I just don't know.

I am off to a late start this AM. The goats are screaming I'm baaad. But I will enjoy a morning cup of coffee first. I havent tried moving it much. I have a front end loader, so I will rock it . In the end, if this doesn't work, I will have to drag it to my driveway. Like you, I am sure this is a simple problem. I had been debating if I was going to send it in for servicing winter, this pretty well makes that decision for me.

Thanks for the manual, it will save me digging mine up. Other than a fast look for the obvious, I havent looked at the transmission cover. I think this will be the last straw that gets it to the shop. I have a number of small problems with it. The trade off is that by sending it in, I will loose a couple of hundred dollars, but i will gain on time and busted knuckles .

Actually I had not thought about the loader. It is probably a long shot, but maybe you can get the loader to accomplish the same effect as towing by walking the tractor back just an inch or two. Maybe it would be enough to get everything to slide into place.

Some years I do the maintenance myself and sometimes I have it taken to the shop--just kinda depends on what mood I am feeling on that particular year. I just recently did my first oil change on my 2038R and whoever put the oil filter on did not lubricate the gasket first--I almost thought I was not going to be able to get the filter off!! I think I am pretty good for maintenance this year.

You have had a rough month or so with hardware! Maybe it will be something you can laugh at--sometime?

Not familiar with that model, but curious: Does the PTO still funtion?

I know there are some safety devices that interact with the PTO on my 790 ....total longshot, just thinking there may be some kind of PTO/drivetrain lockout safety device accidentally engaged or perhaps broke.

The brush cutter transaxel is supposed to be delivered to the shop today. DR air freighted it. We will see. If so, I go back to my earlier view that the company is suffering from green staff. But, that part is going to have to show first.

Using the bucket to move it worked. It went into low gear with considerable effort. I have it moved to a covered area. This leaves me to wonder what is going on inside the box. I would assume there is supposed to be some kind of lubricant in there that maybe isnt there any more. By any means I will take John Daleys suggestion and look for a way to open it up.

Well I am glad you got it in gear!

Can you now move it back and forth between neutral and low fairly easily? Will it go into High at all? My experience is that just getting a bit of movement gets things going. BTW, was the tractor sitting for some length of time? Just a thought.

It runs in the same bath of gear oil as the rest of the transmission. If you can read the dip stick on the transmission/rear differential, since it's all the same housing, it will reveal any shortage of lubricant.

I am sending it in to be worked on. I can get it to shift, but it is struggle. The writing on the wall says I will get it out to the middle of nowhere and will be unable to get it back.

Look for a local brand agnostic repair shop that has experience with your size of tractor, I will take the guys you actually fix things over the dealers who just want to keep you coming back. Ask around. There is nearly always one in any given area. They tend to be a lot more reasonable on prices but might take a bit longer. You can almost always tell the good ones because their shops stay stacked up.

Just my 2 cents...

Money may not make people happy but it will get you all the warm fuzzy puppies you can cuddle and that makes most people happy.

The JD is ready. All problems were addressed including a wheel hub, transmission, water pump, and new belts for 400.....oh yes ...pick up and delivery from 60 miles away. In my world, that is a bargain. It freed up a lot of my time.

John, I have had troubles with my control levers on my Kubota tractors, and it has been lack of lubrication in the linkages on the outside of the machine (not internal transmission/valve trouble) especially since they are hidden by the covers with slots in them, or boots over them, it's difficult to get in there to oil them, or even see what's going on in there... My loader stick often "sticks" in one direction on the BX2380 rather than centering, so I have to manually center it... before finding the oil.

Nails are sold by the pound, that makes sense.

I would sure pick up a wrench less often if there was a shop around here like that. There is exactly one tractor shop anywhere near me, and I would be expecting a 4 digit bill for that list, even if I did the transport... after a lot of chasing them and waiting.
