I am cleaning out my spices. I have one that is mislabeled. Looks like this:
It's labeled kalonji, which looks like this:
Definitely not kalonji.
It tastes weakly peppery, kind of a rich back flavor, and I remember buying it when I was trying to get Black Cumin, so it may be sold under that name.
Any guesses? It's a good flavor, I use it, wondering what it really is though.
def not kalonji.
Looks like szechuan peppercorns- i can't blow up the pic to get a better look though. are they kinda tingly-peppery when you chew on them?
Hm. Looked at pics of szechuan peppercorns. Doubtful. This stuff is all one color, unless the corn (?) is broken, then it's white inside shows. The szechuan look like more different colors.
It does taste peppery, but not heavily. I can chew a whole one, without wanting to spit it out :)

Then, I'm betting on Grains of Paradise.

Mine are definitely all one color, but the inside is white (most are broken open)-- still, you're probably not going to chew on them happily.
That said, I've never seen grains of paradise but from what the internet shows me, it looks like a good contender!

A szechuan peppercorn has a black ball inside.
No black ball.
And definitely itty bitty very round balls, the pics I see of Grains of Paradise look like a bulb shape to me, and bigger. Looking at the spices I'm sorting, only a HAIR bigger than whole mustard seeds.
That one's puzzling. Some of the pics I see are labeled Grains of Paradise too, some pics look right, some look like the bulb shape that's not right.
Hmmm...
Germination test? Maybe you could identify the resulting plant?
Nails are sold by the pound, that makes sense.
