I got my willow cuttings a couple days ago and opened up the box. I didn't know that they'd be budding. I really figured they'd be sticks.
My question for those who might know, is can I get these planted right now? If it frosts a couple of times between now and a month from now, will it harm them? If I have to, I can temporarily plant them next to the house with ESE exposure if need be, but if it isn't going to hurt anything, less work is more better. ;)
Willows are pretty tough. I think the worst scenario is that the growing tips get frosted and they might have to regrow from buds lower down. I'd nip off the leafy parts anyway, because you don't want them pulling water out of the cutting on sunny days before some roots start growing.
I would plant them asap. They'll be happier in the ground than like this. Willow is generally hardy and doesn't need much; I started mine from one stick from a roadside tree and from another tree which gets blown by the wind into my garden.
I got my willows in... thanks everyone for your input. It turned out to be a nice day to put them in. A bit chilly, but mostly sunny and tomorrow is supposed to get up to almost 60 degrees.
They're home. I won't worry about them! If some of them don't make it, I'll have plenty of limbs to harvest in the fall.

They ended up being well-rooted cuttings with the root balls encased in potting soil. No wonder the leaves were already going crazy. Shout out to Zachary at Kisler Creek Sales on Etsy for your dedication to offering thriving willow cuttings. (They were running a 60 percent off sale when I bought mine!).
