PD the PA scrapbook

I'm sorry I don't have much time to chat. They keep us pretty busy here at the project. I've tried a few times to write a nice introduction of myself along with posting these pics but something always came up to pull me away. Anyway I remember how much I enjoyed seeing pictures of "The Project" before I came to live up here. So I'll post the pics now and try & go back later to fill in explanations when time allows. I'm open to any suggestions & or answering any questions so feel free to write either on this thread or in a private moosage.

I know the date stamp is way off. I fixed it later that day. As I recall these were taken for Paul's TEDx Whitefish but I don't believe they made the cut. I would have gotten closer but Sasha was preparing to pounce.

More plant ID...Interesting moss growing all around here. Stays green even in January. I'm wondering if it would make a good candidate for moss art.

Thanks so much for posting these pictures! Although, it's hard to believe that Sasha is a hazard, other than by being unreasonably CUTE!

Well Julia.....Sasha doesn't care for guys too much but we have been working on that....teaching her that the guys that belong on the property are ok!

Try having them feed her. If there's time, have them feed her by hand (assuming she eats kibble) and ideally, she gets the food after doing something nice, like sitting.

What a lovely sit she has! How big is she now?

This is a lichen. Lichens are composite organisms made up of fungi component and alga or cyanobacterium component. The vibrant almost florescent yellow/green color of this lichen leads me to believe it is most likely Letharia vulpina. Lichens are slow growing organisms. I am not sure if it is possible to propagate lichens, but I have a feeling it is much more difficult than propagating moss. I do know Lethatia vulpina can be used to make a beautiful golden yellow dye on wool.

Isaac is close I think. That looks like dried Bitterroot (aka Spreading Dogbane), which fits since this part of the Rocky Mountain chain is known as the Bitterroot Range.

I double checked in the NATIVE PLANT DATABASE from the University of Texas at Austin.

If the bush you harvested those from look like that come spring (say May or June) then that is what it is. The page I linked to indicates its baser properties - the primary of which is that it is poisonous, although some of the First Nations folks made thread from the fibers and such from my InfernalNet-fu.

It seams that the quickest way to Sasha's heart is through her stomach.

Picked these up for the vermicomposting project me & Oliver will be working on. They are opaque and seem to be just the right size for the Red wiggler's (Eisenia fetida) bins we're making.
