Anyone have any info on the construction of small cabins built into the side of hills, 3 sides covered by earth ?

What kind of walls and floors are involved ?

What is the insulation value of earth ?

How are they damp proofed ?

Hi Richard,
I think this richsoil article about Wofati would be a good start for your search.

The $50 & Up Underground House Book by Mike Oehler is a classic guide to building affordable, energy-efficient underground homes, focusing on low-cost methods like the Post/Shoring/Polyethylene (PSP) system, and incorporating features like greenhouses and root cellars.

Check out Icelandic turf houses. They're not exactly built into hillsides, but almost (the walls on three sides are built from rocks, turf and soil, and quite thick).

Need more information as to goals.  Wood, rock?  Other?  Since you are in the natural building forum I assume you are not interested in answers with concrete etc?

I live in an earth berm passive solar home.  Far beyond a cabin though.  60'x16' with full basement.  And of course modern materials so guessing I may as well stop here?

And then check out the book “Hacking the Earthship” which contains a thoughtful critique of those designs as well as how its ideas can be more practically and effectively applied.

I am not sure an Earth ship would qualify as a 'buried ' house.
Its a different concept?
