Some are removed for
https://permies.com/t/31128/category-cider-press

Others are triggering a spam filter.
Spam filter has its own algorithm and we can't see how it works.   Duplicate posts, posting only self promotion, that sort of thing can trigger it.

r ransom:

I am posting stories, most with permaculturists in mind, and linking to a very valuable project called:

Resilient Communities Network
https://resilientcommunities.network/index.html

This is not self-promotion per se but asking people to check-out the project... I am a volunteer.

I am nice. I don't submit duplicates.... until today!

Question: How do I get around your spam filter? Suggestions are needed please. Thank you.

Hmmm, a tricky one.

There are a lot of self promotion threads on this account, and no community participation outside your own self promotional content.

I suspect you've reached this stage

So rather than being part of our community, you need the cheat codes so you can use our community for your benefit?

Yuck.

Hi Paul. Thanks for taking time out from your day to address my self-serving "yuck!"

As a urban permaculturist / PDCer, the project that I'm blogging for here (https://resilientcommunities.network/) is surely important to permies every where...

As a new mythologist / poet, I am advancing new ways to tell stories and raise awareness in reference to the many troubles in the land...

It is in this spirit that I inquired about the spam filter...

Can we turn yuck into valued content? I hope so. If you are willing.

I wish to be part of permies.com.

Cordially, WGP

From what I know of the spam filter, this is 100% up to you.  People promote their stuff every day without catching the spam filters attention.

There are some threads around here somewhere with information on how to do respectful self promotion.   I suspect the current filter is modeled after that.

..and raise awareness in reference to the many troubles in the land...

Ah, wrong audience.

The readers here know about the problems and are bored wasting time worrying about them when they can get out there and do something useful like growing carrots or harvesting chicory root for coffee. Or which are the best sheep breed for sock darning wool.  Or how to build a violin without modern plastic based glues. Or hundreds of thosuands of other practical projects.

Permies has a strong focus on practical solutions.  Problem awareness raising belongs in the cider press (see above link).

That is nice to hear.

So you enjoy the idea of talking to people about growing parsnips.  Or maybe about building with slip straw.  Rocket mass heaters?

Maybe find a dozen posts where a new user is trying to understand how to garden/build something and offer a few guiding tips?

If you want to talk about philosophy or social justice, then that goes to the cider press.  You will need to build your apple count before you are allowed to post there.

Far too many people come here to USE us and our site for their own benefit.  And they don't give a flying fuck at why the site exists or why we work so hard here.

At the same time, thousands of people come here a dozen times a day because they enjoy being part of this community.

It would seem the spam filter is working perfectly.  Perhaps rather than trying to find a way around our spam filter so you can abuse this site for your spam ....   instead ....   you learn a bit about our community and how to be a part of it.   In other words, rather than getting us to comply with your spam efforts, I would like you to comply with our community building efforts.

Start with becoming part of the community.  Look at the existing threads and talk about the things we talk about.

If you go to a catholic mass, you will have to kneel, and stand, and kneel, and don't yawn ...   and other stuff.  You go with the flow.    You don't wait for a minute to pass and say "Hey!  You up there!  Shut the fuck up for a second and tell me how to get these fuckers to look at my stuff rather than listening to your prattle."

It looks like you have 43 posts and zero apples.

I think most people that get to 43 posts have 10 to 15 apples.  Really great people have almost as many apples as posts.

43 posts and zero apples has some REALLY powerful subtext here.  Not good.

Paul -

All in all, I strongly believe in the project (https://resilientcommunities.network/) that I brought to permies.com - and it's relevance to the work bring done here. I likely failed when I posted about it through new myths and haiku. After all, there are forums to plug into that involve intentional communities and ecovillages at your site.

See you in church!

Here's some really good resources on this subject: Promoting Your Stuff on Permies for FREE! and advertising for free (and not-free) on permies.com. Even if you're not trying to advertise anything, they help explain how to not be spammy. Here's some quotes:

How to avoid looking like a spammer:

  • Make one thread about your service/product/event. Make this thread look nice and professional using formatting tags, and post replies, updates, new pictures, etc to that thread. Multiple threads saying the same thing look spammy.
  • Add your one thread to multiple forums by using PIE &/or Thread Boost. This allows your thread to show up in multiple forums.
  • Make your thread a wiki. This allows you to edit whenever you like to add new pictures or update information. You can make a post a wiki through the "wiki" tab when you compose or edit your post. The "wiki" tab is next to the attachments tab where you add pictures.
  • Refrain from posting about your product/event/service on other people's threads unless it makes sense. If you make a lot of posts about your service on other people's threads, especially in a row, we will assume you are a spammer and your posts will be deleted. Add your link to your signature, and post only about your service/product/event when it is very relevant and helpful to the conversation.

  • and:

In order to be useful, your content should be:
    Relevant to permaculture or homesteading;
    Accurate and complete; and
In English (just like Permies posts).

Notice the "Make one thread about your service/product/event." You're more likely to get clicks on one longer thread with multiple posts, than multiple different threads that have no replies. Every time you reply to your thread, it bumps it up in the "Recent Topics" so more people see it. And, the more people see one thread, the more likely it is that they'll get curious and click on it. If they go to "Recent Topics" and see a ton of threads that are all pretty similar, all made by one person, people will view it and spam. They might also just leave permies because it looks spammy--that hurts permies, so we have to take action.

Is it okay to post on this thread if I have a question that fits the thread title?

For days I would log onto Permies and see in the upper right corner multiple notifications, under the “bell” icon, that someone liked a specific comment I made. Usually if I click on that bell, and then on the notification, it takes me to my comment.

But for the particular comment in question, if I clicked on the notification I got a playfully-worded message telling me the page didn’t exist. The first time this happened I presumed it was a bug or something. After the second, or maybe third or fourth time, I got curious and tried navigating to my comment the old fashioned way, only to discover the whole thread had disappeared. How had people been liking it if it had been removed? (I checked Cider Press too.)

The original thread was about cars that park themselves, though my comment was responding to something someone else had written further down about door handles. I guess I could see why that thread might get moved to Cider Press (it was sort of complaining about something without offering anything practical), but I’m not clear why it had to be taken down entirely.

Out of pure curiosity, I’m wondering why that thread was removed (that information would help elucidate the moderation guidelines), and how I was able to receive notifications that people were thumbs-upping it if it had disappeared (was it a technical glitch?).

It usually means the thread was removed for spam, not meeting publishing standards or, like you guessed, cider press.

Moving threads to the cider press causes a load of pain in the long term, so we stoped doing that.  But people with sufficient pie and aplle can start a new one.

Threads in the cider press can be read by anyone, but only those who have earned pie and apples, can post there.

We used that specific thread for some staff training and review after it was taken down.  We wanted to see if it could be cleaned and put back.  I bet some of the people reviewing it added some likes.  It becomes automatic to like posts we enjoy.

I didn't know they still showed in the bell after the thread is removed.  That's good to know.

R's explanation works, but it's also possible that:
    1) you post your comment and then go do other stuff
    2) one or more people like your comment, triggering the bell up
    3) the thread gets disappeared for whatever reasons
    4) you come back and your bell still shows the appreciation people had for your comment but you can't get to the thread to see exactly which comments was liked.
