Hey all,

Sometimes my farm purchases equipment or supplies that arrive boxed and thoroughly padded with stryofoam.
I groan every time I see it - argh, it breaks into a zillion tiny blobs that have static cling persistent enough to stowaway on a rocket. And it is BULKY. And I don't want to burn it.... Or mulch it. Can't recycle it.   And I definitely do not want any of the animals to find/nibble/eat it.

This morning it occurred to me that maybe I should reframe my exceedingly poor opinion of styrofoam, stop hating on it, and think of it as a weed? Maybe it has some use in some way on a farm?

Maybe of some of you clever and creative Permies peeps have actually found some use for it?

I used a load of salvaged styrofoam beads and fabric from worn-out T-shirts to make bags to pack around pans in my 'hay box'. I also used salvaged sheets of similar insulation foam to line the actual box.

Here's a link to the post about making it.

We're also gradually filling up the loft with salvaged blue insulation sheets, either left-overs from places my son works or salvaged in bulk from people ripping them out and putting thicker ones in.

Gimmie! Gimmie dammit! Gimmie that tiny ad!
