Here is my project...a 10x20 small home under the earth and garden on top....
The materials ihave to work with are 3x6x5foot long was going to space them at 16" apart on center making something like a barn style truss then i scrouge a bunch of 4x4 rough of diferent lent and was going to use that as me wall covering...
My question is will it be strong enough to hold dirt on top about 16" of soil on top....

Any sugestion would be appriciated thank

Howdy luch, welcome to Permies!

I don't think anyone could hazard a guess on how stable your design would be, structurally, without a lot more information.

Of what 'materials' are you building your structure?
Are the walls going to be completely underground? Are they load bearing?
You mention covering them with 4x4's of some kind, but of what will they be made?
How are you sealing the roof?
What sort of soil are you digging into to build your house?
How much water will it hold, and will those 16" on your roof freeze in the winter?

There are far too many variables to say whether that outline of a blueprint would be structurally sound. That being said there are gobs of great resources here at Permies regarding underground construction!

An awesome book on the subject of small, cheap and comfortable underground living is Mike Oehler's book on the subject. There's a lively thread about that here.

Based on Mike's design, the fella who runs these forums, Paul Wheaton, is developing a type of housing structure he calls Wofati. An article explaining the specifics (with a lot of great info about concerns, challenges and solutions for any underground structure) can be found here.

Great threads on underground home construction can be found here, here, and here.

Also if you're after the hobbit aesthetic there's a thread about the signature circular door here.

Best of luck with your home under the hill!

Thank for the reply...
Yes you are correct....figuired after tge mesage was sent i was lacking info...
Im building my trust out of red pine that are 3"x6"x5 feet barn style roof....
Im in claydirt i will be about 4feet on the walls and about 2 feet of claydirt.....
My wall will be out of 4"x4"x 16footer timber.....
I will use torch on roofing tar/ or blueskin if i can get a good price through my work.....
Not to worried about the water on top of a hill lots of drainage....
So it will be about 10' x 16' in lenght...small weekend shelter...for guest/squaters....

here is my go-to on hobbit house thinking:
BeingSomewhere

best of luck to you!

what if we put solar panels on top of the semi truck trailer? That could power this tiny ad:
