From your pictures, it appears that your mulberries are rooted in sand, other plants appear to be rooted in the soil. Is there a plan that denotes which medium you use? Or does your plan consist only of: Empty space is here, fill it!

Softwood (summer cuttings) are in sand, hardwood dormant cuttings go in soil

Well, now that I've seen your answer, duh!

That fits with the research I've done in the past. I intend to start hardwood cutting this winter. Elderberry, mulberry, chokeberry, and a couple others. Just to increase my own population though.

Thanks Akiva for a very inspiring, honest and well written article.. You touch upon so many valid points mate.. I have seen quite few of your videos on youtube and have learned a lot from both you and Sean (Edible Acres)..

I have been taking steps towards my own small nursery over here in Spain. Up till now just getting my stock plants together, growing my soil and learning as much as I can cram into my already stufed brain!
My daily routine is crazy busy at the best of times, yet I continue to dream and work and learn.

Yes, we are certainly very blessed indeed, if only we but know it!!

Very well written article! I loved the just start it part.
I have a much smaller nursery and I think that selling is the tough part. But then In the US it is maybe easier because there are just more people in the same climate or most likely you just work more.
I want to add something: before you ever dream of nursery study the postage rates. It is a killing. Bare rooting plants is a lot of work, but how many potted plants can you cram in a parcel? There is a ratio of packaging and postage and the value of the plant.
Over time you will have to invest money, for example a watering system, it is not a whole lot and you can make it much cheaper than usual nurseries but it is money.
Not everything is sellable. I love unusual plants. Sometimes there is just no market for say Tibetan gentians. I found that ebay is not worthwhile because most order I got were one or two plants per parcel.
BTW are haskap berries from seed good eating? I am interested in that plant!
