This is a tutorial on how to make a gear review really awesome.

As a refresher, the review thread should begin with a Summary and then the Reviews should be posted below it.

(For a tutorial on How to Make a Summary for a Review Grid, click HERE)
(For a tutorial on How to Make a Review for a Review Grid, click HERE)

Here's a list of our current Review Grids:
  • Book Review Grid
  • Seed & Plant Source Review Grid
  • DVD/Film Review Grid
  • Gear Review Grid
  • Critter Breeder Review Grid

  • Step
    1

When creating the Summary for the item

Make the review of the item unbiased.  Just provide information for people to understand what the item is, where to find it and what it looks like.

Embedding a picture in the post (often from Amazon) gives the reader some eye candy.  To get an image, find one on the internet.  Right click on the image and select Copy Image Location.  Click the Img button above your post and paste (Ctrl-V).  If the image is an Amazon one with the "hover and zoom with the mouse" feature, this won't work.

Please include at least an Amazon link to the item.  These are automatically turned into affiliate links so the empire gets a small slice of the pie if the click leads to a purchase.

Youtube videos of the product are quite powerful.  Including other references (podcasts, articles, blogs, etc) is also helpful.

    Step
    2

When creating a Review for the item

One of the best ways for your review to shine is to make a Youtube video of you using/reviewing the product.  If you do this, listing the gear review URL in the description of the video really gets the Googlelove flowing.

Here are some questions you may want to answer in the course of your review:
    1. How much have you used the item.  Does it seem like it will last a few years or a lifetime?
    2. How much did it cost?
    3. Did you figure out any tricks, tips or improvements for the item?
    4. Have you used a competing item and how did this compare?

Attaching a picture of your gear would be nifty.

Try to incorporate "keywords" naturally into your review.  If reviewing an axe, you might want to use the words "splitting", "felling", "chainsaw", and/or "log splitter" as you do the review.  Or phrases like "best axe for splitting".  This moves the review up in Google searches.  Be warned though:  Just making a long list of related words at the end of the post does more harm than good.  The key is to make it conversational.

Would you mind posting an example review here, to add value to this thread?

I know some people (like myself) really benefit from seeing the end result, rather than just reading about it (although your steps are quite clear).

    Good guidelines!!

Great idea Dustin!  Here are a few examples that are pretty darn good:
    Snake Boots
    Darn Tough Socks

Here's the Gear Review Thread where all the reviews show up.  Click on any of the blue gear titles to pull up the review and see how they were done.  We've been working on the tutorials for a bit so there is a fair bit of variation in the style of the current reviews.

It wasn't my idea to go to some crazy nightclub in the middle of nowhere. I just wanted to stay home and cuddle with this tiny ad:
