This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEP curriculum.  Completing this BB is part of getting the straw badge in Dimensional Lumber Woodworking.

Stepping out of your house should be a fun experience.  Falling two feet into the mud sucks.  Let's build a simple deck to provide some outdoor living space.









To complete this BB, the minimum requirements are:
- build a 50+ square foot deck including the supporting structure (not just resurfacing an existing deck)
- reasonably safe and with stairs if applicable
- clearly sturdy enough for general use
- no treated wood
- no paint, stain or varnish

To document your completion of the BB, provide proof of the following as pics or video (less than two minutes):
- the wood you're starting with
- the site where the deck will be built
- the structure of the deck in place
- the finished deck

Deck Boards were mostly ash reclaimed from an 1880s downtown warehouse. It will be under cover and protected from precipitation, so I’m hoping it will prove durable. Grabbed a couple cedar 2x’s laying around to round out the surface. Support was reclaimed cedar from an old deck. Screws were salvaged from another job. Cinder block piers were leftover from when my great great grandpa built our farmhouse.

I built a deck, from scratch - literally.  After searching for a while for a source of cedar, I found a neighbor who had dead standing cedar trees that apparently were dying from climate stress.  I fell them, limbed them, bucked them into 13ft lengths and loaded them in the dump trailer.  Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures of that stage of the project.  I then hauled them home (picture below).  I milled them into 2x6 and ran them through the planer to get them smooth and uniform dimension and sticker stacked them (picture below).  Then I built the deck, routing a chamfer on the edges of the boards before screwing them down.

In the process of building a deck right now. It will have an awning with a roof when I'm done.
The deck is 8ft wide by 7-1/2 ft or 60sq ft.
Using untreated douglas fir 2x6's as the decking, 2x4's for the subfloor, and 4x4's for the posts.
Most of the 2x4's are reclaimed, free wood.
