I stopped and talked to the owner but she had no idea what kind of tree this is.

Forgot to mention, and it's hard to tell, but the berries are about the size of a cranberry.

That's a Mountain Ash. It is called Rowan in Europe. The Chinese cultivar is used as a black pepper substitute. The American cultivars typically have larger orange or yellow berries. The European cultivar has rounded leaves instead of pointed.

Rowan is one of the sacred trees of Britain.

The berries are very tart and make a good jelly to serve with lamb or game.
