So I know on some forums and fb groups sending direct messages is not encouraged. If I have a question for someone that does not really relate to their posts, is it acceptable to send them a mossage?

The main function of the PM system is so that people can exchange email addresses and then take their communications elsewhere.

PMs here are NOT private - staff have access to them. All PMs have to follow the 'be nice' policy, but staff don't want to waste time vetting them. Action will, however, be taken if PMs are seen to be not nice or being used for purposes that are not in harmony with the aims of the site.

Spamming by PM, or stalking, or generally annoying other members is not allowed. Ranting about the moderation or insulting staff members behind the scenes is likely to result in an instant ban if a staff member stumbles on it. We don't work to provide this service only to receive insults. A rather senior member here was banned very recently for abusing the PM system so please be considerate in what you write and don't create work for the moderators.

Permies is a forum, not a private messaging system.  The development goes into perfecting the forum side of things with a low priority given to the PM side.  There could be glitches we haven't found yet and glitches we have found but haven't gotten around to fixing yet.

Personally I hate PMs.  If I want to talk to someone about something off-topic, I would start a new thread and send a PM saying "hey, I'm interested in what you have to say about this topic" with a link to the new thread.  Then if they don't reply to the thread, I know they aren't interested in it or they have PM notifications turned off.  But we now have a thread with lots of other people can reply to, or not, as they desire.

Okay, I'm hoping the gal replies to my question about her goats. I'm just  super happy to have discovered this breed and that someone here has experience with them

Some of us have a 'watch' set for certain words, including our names so that when the word is used in a thread we get an email notice and a link to the post.  I think it's one of the pie perks?  Maybe you could try adding her name to your post just in case....

I couldn't find it under Pie, but I think I found it by clicking "My Bookmarks and Watches" at the top of the screen. I actually set a watch on that phrase, so I'm testing it now.

When I didn't get immediate results, I put watches on a few words I was sure would be used soon. I got an email that someone mentioned "permies", though I couldn't find that word in the post. Then I got an email that someone mentioned "plant". I never got an email when I mentioned "My Bookmarks and Watches", so I've concluded the code is smart enough to not email me unless someone else mentions the watched phrase.
