Click here to see the Kickstarter!

The Kickstarter for my homestead kitchen skills and real food cookbook is now live!

There’s an earlybird bundle! Ending on Sunday 8pm USA mountain time. Here’s some more information about what’s included: https://permies.com/t/151135/Earlybird-bundle-Grid-Kitchen-Kickstarter

For information about kickbacks and affiliate links, visit this page: https://permies.com/t/150865/Kickback-deal-grid-homesteading-cookbook

Reclaim old skills to create a resilient food system...

A Year in an Off-Grid Kitchen is a cookbook that shows you how to learn the essential kitchen skills that helped our ancestors to thrive in harsh times.

A Year in an Off-Grid Kitchen follows the seasons, so that you can learn one skill at a time while also finding recipe inspiration in seasonal local recipes that are designed to be cooked in everyday homestead life.

When the the panic buying, empty shelves, and restrictive rations hit earlier this year, it was not a problem for my family, because we knew these skills, and knew how to feed ourselves without the supermarket system. With the help of this book, you can learn these skills too.

Prosciutto ham and cheese. These foods are often taken for granted, or seen as too complicated to make at home, but are actually quite simple processes that this book can teach you.

It’s often intimidating to face learning all the skills we need for a future off the grid. With A Year in an Off-Grid Kitchen, you can treat it as a self-paced homestead cooking course, or just pick the book up and learn something new whenever you like.

Kimchi. I share the easy fermenting recipes and techniques that are staples in my home, and the same ones that I sell to my market customers. I provide clear instructions that suit anyone from beginners to advanced cooks, one recipe tester said “This is the first ferment I've made that I felt like I could trust!”

The book...

Around 220 pages in length, 10.75” by 8.25” in size, the book is packed full with over 100 recipes to make, skills to learn, and tips and tricks to make real food cooking work in busy lifestyles, wherever you are.

The recipes are not just any recipes, but adaptable everyday ones that you’ll want to make over and over, using easily-found ingredients.

These recipes have been tested in many different kitchens, and will work on wood stoves as well as conventional electric and gas cookers. These are the recipes that fuel my homestead. I’ve included many variations and ingredient substitutions to help you make the recipes with whatever ingredients are on hand at the time.

The book is presented in full colour, with lots of full-page photos, plus smaller photos on some pages.

To find out more, click here to visit the Kickstarter.
Staff note (Kate Downham) :

The Kickstarter is over. Reviews of the book, and details about how to order a copy, can be found here: https://permies.com/wiki/152738/Year-Grid-Kitchen-Kate-Downham

The earlybird offer has now closed, but I am offering a lot of good things, even at the $1 level, plus the books are priced lower than they will be in future, and Kickstarter backers will receive their books before the official release date, so everyone who backs this in the next 27 days is still getting a really good deal.

Getting closer to the rocket oven stretch goal! just under $2900aud to go, or $2121usd.

The ultimate supporter level that gets the stretch goal rewards is already good value on its own - you get a custom hardcover with a dedication (or just the normal hardcover if you prefer), the ebook, cooking club membership, meal plans, bonus extra recipes that no one else gets, and an optional thank you in the pages of the book, along with all the goodies at the $1 and $5 levels.

With 27 days to go, it's very likely that Rocket Ovens will be included, and maybe some more stretch goals too.

I made a mistake when reading the currency conversion, $15,000aud is actually just under $11,000usd, so we're not quite there yet, but will be soon by the look of it!

This is really exciting to be over 300% funded, and announcing another stretch goal in the first week of the Kickstarter!

Thank you to everyone that has backed this, and thank you to Permies for helping to get the word out about it.

We made it to the first stretch goal! New stretch goal announced!

New stretch goal: $22,000aud ($16,000usd)

100% Rye ebook by Shannon Stronger

This ebook not only contains the recipe for the best brownies I’ve ever tasted, but also recipes for breads, muffins, tortillas, noodles, biscuits, focaccia, pancakes, chocolate cake, pie crust, and more, all made with 100% rye flour, no other grains, and only real food ingredients.

You can find out more about the book here: http://ryebook.nourishingdays.com/

If you’re not already familiar with Shannon’s recipes, you are in for a treat. She is one of my favourite authors, who has written books about fermentation, off-grid homestead infrastructure, frugal family cooking, and more. Her blog can be found at http://nourishingdays.com.

If we reach this new stretch goal, then everyone at the ultimate supporter level will get…

•100% Rye ebook

•Rocket Ovens digital DVD

•Hardcover edition of “A Year in an Off Grid Kitchen” with optional extra dedication page

•Ebook edition of “A Year in an Off Grid Kitchen”

•Option of your name being in thanked in the book

•Access to the cooking club

•8 weeks of meal plans

•Bonus extra recipes

•Everything in “Thanks”

•Everything in “Peek”

Plus possibly more…

The cookbook is making great progress. I will be giving it to the proofreader and editor shortly, and if there are no big problems, we will be on track for the books to be arriving in your mailboxes ahead of schedule!

400% funded!

Before the Kickstarter began, I reduced the goal amount the the bare minimum, taking out the things I'd already paid for, because I just really really wanted to see the book in print.

It's been such a strange year, and it's been hard to predict what would happen when I clicked the 'launch' button.

I'm really happy that it's been this successful. Thank you Permies, and everyone else that has helped!

I had an idea of creating printable gift cards as a special extra for Kickstarter supporters.

A lot of people are buying gifts at this time of year, and I wonder if anyone would like something nice to print out to show that they have pre-ordered a book for the gift recipient.

I've started a thread about it here and am looking for more ideas, and any feedback on whether this is a good idea or not: https://permies.com/t/151818/Printable-gift-cards-part-cookbook

I'd be interested to hear your ideas on it, Pearl. I don't really know where to start! I might have a go of creating something today and upload to that thread, I like the idea of having a small picture of the cover and some information about the book on the card.
