Hello everyone. I am very pleased to visit with you for the next few days. We can talk about anything you like, but I suppose at least some of the discussion will be about Fukuoka-san's "new" book, Sowing Seeds in the Desert. I wrote the word new in quotes because it is a book he published in Japanese in the mid 1990s but we are only now getting it out in English. But anything is fair game...the time I spent with Fukuoka-san and the other student workers on his farm in the 1970s, traveling with him in the United States, how we got the books published in English, Fukuoka-san's plan to revegetate the human-caused deserts of the world using the approach of natural farming, his basic world-view, the similarities and differences between natural farming and permaculture...anything. I am looking forward to this! ~Larry

Thank you for this book. Looking forward. Read One Straw Revolution in 1993 on a train from south to north India... was a journey within and without. Now a full time gardener since last year. The seed was definitely sown.

So I ran the random picker which picked ten random posts from this forum for the last few days. I skip over the stuff that doesn't follow the naming convention. I then picked out the best two posts. The first was not in the daily-ish email, so .... disqualified. The second .... same thing.

So I run the program again ... ten are shown ... both disqualified

So I run the program again ... ten are shown ... both disqualified

So I run the program again ... ten are shown ... the first is in the daily-ish email! (the second is not, so only one winner this week)

Congratulations

Kari Gunnlaugsson

I will be sending you an email to ask you for your snail mail address and the email address of the person that referred you to permies.com. If that person is in the daily-ish email, then that person will also receive a book. But remember, you have to respond within 24 hours.

Oh ... was that me? I was going to suggest donating one to the Fukuoka family so they could keep it for foreign visitors and to encourage them by how well respected the old man is.

BTW, I had one comment to make about the podcast. I seem to remember in it a big thing is made of Fukuoka taking two crops out of his fields. I just wanted to say this is quite traditional at least in the Iyo area and goes back a long way before industrial farming.

They say the area in which Fukuoka lived was the first in Japan to be cultivated in that typically square patchwork you see everywhere. (I don't know this to be true but I have heard it said).
