I needed to crochet a thing for a spinning class I am taking. I had never crocheted and my classmates were kind enough to help me out, but I wanted to try making the thing again (a wrist distaff) but I also didn't have a hook. So I made one!

Bamboo, multitool, lawn chair, and a little sanding.

Wow, that looks pretty good. Hope it works well for you, I want to eventually make my own crochet hooks and knitting needles (or find someone who can). I've seen some really creative and beautifully styled homemade tools that would be lovely to use. Good job and good luck on your endeavors!

I thought the little dent in the crochet hook shaft was just there for stamping the hook size. Does it serve another purpose?

Beautiful work by the way.

I believe it helps to control the rotation you need to crotchet - at least that what I use  the dent for. I think that perfectly round would force me to use more pressure to hold the tool, which is tiring.

It is actually a finger/thumb rest for better control of the hook.  There are actually two ways to hold a hook  "knife" or "pencil"
