Hello Everybody!

My name is Frank, and though I've dreamed of owning my own homestead throughout my adult life, this dream has only now become a reality. Recently, I purchased a plot of land (I'm scheduled to finalize the deal on September 1st) in Fountain, Colorado. The land spans 6.2 acres of high desert terrain, featuring a prominent hill at its center. While this unique landscape poses challenges for construction, I am eagerly prepared to tackle them head-on. Having visited this forum for some time, I refrained from creating an account, feeling that participation was premature. However, now that I'm on the brink of becoming a homesteader (or perhaps a farmsteader—I'm still discerning the difference), I've decided to step out of the shadows and become an active member.

My journey has involved approximately 12 years of researching and studying permaculture, and I'm thrilled to finally translate the ideas I've long pondered into tangible actions. It's liberating to embark on this path without anyone dismissing my fervor for responsible agriculture. I'm eager to share each step of my venture with all of you, documenting the highs and lows. I greatly value the wealth of wisdom within this community, and I'm counting on your insights to help steer me away from costly blunders. I plan to approach this endeavor in distinct stages, and I've already outlined the initial phase of my homestead plan, which I'll detail in a separate forum post.

I am a Holistic Farmer who melds the teachings of the past, the advancements of the present, and the aspirations of a sustainable future. By seamlessly weaving together permaculture principles, agroforestry techniques, and an unwavering commitment to self-sufficiency through closed-loop systems, my objective is not solely to cultivate crops but to foster thriving ecosystems that nurture the land, enrich the community and forge a positive legacy for generations to follow. Driven by a scientific passion, an artistic sensibility, and a dedication to environmental stewardship, I'm resolute in my endeavor to tread gently on the planet while sowing the seeds of innovation and nurturing a fruitful and harmonious homestead.

A bit more about me personally: I was born in Portland, Maine, on December 24th, 1981, and grew up in Naples, Maine. I've always felt a deep connection to the land and spent much of my life practicing paganism. More recently (in 2017), I was baptized as a Christian, though I still maintain many of my core beliefs regarding the land and its inhabitants. Everyone has their own path to walk, and it's not my place to divert people from their destinies. As a Polytheistic Christian, I recognize the presence of multiple gods, yet I personally worship the Christian God above all others, holding no gods before Him. This doesn't mean I advocate suppressing other belief systems; after all, the beauty of our world thrives as a polyculture. Monocultures wither and die, after all

Hi Frank :)

I used to live in that area. Welcome.  I'm very interested to know how your animals will react to artillery practice and tank gunnery at downrange Carson. I'm wondering if it will bother them, or if they'll adjust quickly, not care at all, or if you will have to find specific breeds or animals that are less bothered by it. I hope you have great luck.
