Afternoon Permies!

I have been gifted/cursed with several small bags of Miracle Grow from a well meaning family member who had them and have not used it. I'd guestimate that it is roughly five pounds worth of synthetic fertilizer.

I would like to group-think my options with this stuff. I have zero intention of using it on my vegetable beds so that's out of the question.

Use it for houseplants only? Do I just pitch it in the trash? Would it have any value being trickled into an active compost pile? Is there a responsible way to 'wash it' through a mycelium bed?

Help me make the best decision with this!

My thought is to find an area nursery that is likely to purchase it anyway and make a donation  … or trade.  This will at least reduce MG sales by 5 pounds, and it will not go anywhere it wasn’t going anyway.

John makes a good suggestion. The world won't end based on 5 lbs. of artificial fertilizer. I can't see any sense in sending it to the dump. Stuff in the dump doesn't just magically disappear, it just kicks problems down the road.

I wonder if it might be donated to a seniors' home or a hospice for palliative care patients. These places often have "green spaces" for the residents. It's especially challenging to fertilize houseplants naturally, given the smaller pots and the concerns about introducing plant disease and the eggs of pest insects that can hitchhike along with natural sources. Houseplants are no substitute for true nature, but any green living things can bring people great joy and calm in the long months of winter. My 2c.

I'd just try to find a miracle grow user and give it (or sell it) to them.  That keeps the company from making 5 more lbs.
