I don't work with iron myself, but coming weekend (March 30 & 31) I'll be at the Hunebedcentrum, Borger (the Netherlands) and there will be a blacksmith too, working in the way it was (probably) done in the Iron Age.
Hunebedcentrum is a museum about prehistory in the Netherlands, including some replicas of Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age houses and workspaces. So, if you happen to be in the Netherlands ... Hunebedcentrum
"Also, just as you want men to do to you, do the same way to them" (Luke 6:31)
I had some little pieces of stainless laying around, so i figured I'd try making up a couple of spoons. They turned out pretty good, and were fun to make.
Progression for tooling over the years. They all start out as a 1/4" thick piece of 1" flat bar, about 3" long. It's pretty awesome how many things can start out from a little chunk of metal.
I have dreams of making a cross between a tomahawk and a pulaski. Like a legit tomahawk with a single-hand sized grub hoe on the back where there is oftena hammer or a spike. Say 2lbs with an 18" handle. Someday.....
My husband has begun learning to blacksmith from a family friend, they are making a railroad spike knife together so my husband can use the forge and learn, he likes it so far and I'm encouraging it, he'll get a chance to work on it this weekend again.
I do Celtic, fantasy, folk and shanty singing at Renaissance faires, fantasy festivals, pirate campouts, and other events in OR and WA, USA.
