I've been using PictureThis for a couple of years, mostly to familiarize myself with local flora when I'm out hiking or bike riding on the local river trail. It's a great app, but I know that I haven't exhausted all of its resources.

If you use PictureThis, or a competitor, how do you integrate it with your permaculture growies projects? I like that it can tell me if a plant is doing well or struggling, and offer suggestions on improving the health.

In what ways do you use such apps?

I utilize an App called 'Seek' that helps me get a rough identification on a number of plants. I do not have much of a personal knowledge database so it at least gets me in the ballpark of identification.

It is not a perfect system, it does get some plants wrong especially if they are in early growth stages but it tends to still be in the same family. I can then open up a local plant book to confirm or know I have to do some more digging!

Hi Jim
I use PictureThis as well. Thought, I use it mostly as an identification tool. I used to live in an old farm house with a lot of really old perennials. I would use that to figure out if I wanted to get rid of that plant or keep it and propagate it.

I just read an article about a guy who was using iPlant app by Apple.

This app identified one of the plants he found on his property and later he received a call from someone telling him that he had IDed a plant that was an endangered species.

I am not sure I would want someone knowing I had an endangered species on my property though this guy seems to be thrilled.
