I just ordered some seeds of 'Sweet Garleek' from Row 7 out of pure curiosity and was wondering if anyone knows anything about this hybrid.  https://www.row7seeds.com/products/sweet-garleek-seeds

Does it form a head of cloves like garlic?
Does it overwinter?
Will it be a good clump forming perennial veg?
Does it set seeds or bulbils or both?

Mostly I can't wait to start playing in the kitchen with it.  I wish the seeds had been available earlier for an earlier start, but oh well, the fun starts when it does!  They just started selling them yesterday.

I don’t think they are a hybrid, but a leek bred to have garlic-like flavor.

Row 7 wrote:

Allium porrum

During his decades of working with garlic and leeks from all over the world, allium breeder Hans Bongers identified a unique leek with uniformly straight shafts and a distinct garlicky flavor. He spent 10 years developing this trait, creating a cross that would express the sweetness of leeks with the mild, savory notes of garlic. The result of this love match, Sweet Garleek was first introduced to us by Bejo Seeds and immediately opened up a whole new world of allium possibilities.

While on the topic of Row 7, their Koginut and Centercut squashes are ones that I have tried, and they are very good. Even though Koginut is an F1, they breed relatively true, so seeds saved don’t deviate excessively from the original.

I have eaten garleek. It tasted lovely to me.

My understanding from visiting Row 7 is that it's an interspecies hybrid, but I don't yet know which characteristics it inherited from which species.

I too have some of these garleek seeds from Row 7.  I can imagine well how to handle them - like any other leek - as part of my annual plantings.  But for integration into a perennial garden...

If a few were left undisturbed all season, how well would they self seed?

Wanted to follow up on this thread because I'm germinating some Sweet Garleek seeds currently. How did they do for you? Did they overwinter?

Mine germinated great and then never developed into full-grown plants. But last year was a *terrible* year in the garden for everything, so I wouldn't guess that's representative.

Mine did, but the area I planted them in became more competitive than I expected.  Still, they were alive going into the winter.  They are currently still buried under the snow.  May be another few weeks of a month before I can let you know!
