Discord is realtime, and also makes it easier to communicate with memes and emojis and stuff, which can be richer/higher bandwidth but can also be annoying and alienating...the service was originally developed for people playing video games together, but has now become a general purpose chat tool. It's the main way my writer's group is organized.
As Marshall McLuhan says, the medium is the message. In other words, the way in which you communicate will impact
what you communicate. I think a Discord server could be a good fit for some, but many others would like it less. Personally I prefer forums.
