Excuse me for missing this, which I'm sure I did.

Do we have a permie discord?

I don't know of any active ones.

Not sure if we ever had an official one.  It's possible members made unofficial ones from time to time.

Isn't that what the permies forum is all about?

A place to hang out and talk about things we love?

Permaculture doesn't have to mean instant messaging.

I don't understand the use of the word 'discord' here.

I thought discord was something discouraged on this site

not that kind! Discord is a community chat type site, often used by work groups having meetings, sharing documents, friends hanging out, etc etc.

Discord is realtime, and also makes it easier to communicate with memes and emojis and stuff, which can be richer/higher bandwidth but can also be annoying and alienating...the service was originally developed for people playing video games together, but has now become a general purpose chat tool. It's the main way my writer's group is organized.

As Marshall McLuhan says, the medium is the message. In other words, the way in which you communicate will impact what you communicate. I think a Discord server could be a good fit for some, but many others would like it less. Personally I prefer forums.

I use Discord (reluctantly) for some other groups I'm involved with but that name really puts me off. It's useful for coordinating schedules and announcing events.

I adore the charm and limitations of an old fashion forum. There is nothing so urgent here that it cannot wait until after I fed my chickens.

I use discord for a few  study groups and find the chatroom real time communication stressful and difficult to participate in.

I don't have a mobile to participate in real time and only read it once every day or two.  Whereas a forum keeps threads distinct and I don't have to sort through conversations about cat food to get to the conversations I'm interested in.
