The Marlboro man was something of a chameleon, in that he took on multiple meanings and was always adaptable to the times — which, more than anything else, speaks to the durability of the cowboy in American culture.

According to Wikipedia the campaign was from 1954 to 1999.

I have never smoked but that good looking masculine man would have caught my eye any old day!

My grandpa sold cigarettes out of the back of an Astrovan mainly for for Phillip Morris thru the 80's and 90's and had a small collection of "Marlboro Man" posters and displays. Some of it is still in thier garage, so yep the images were engrained into my pysche as a kid growing up (I lived there the first 6 years of life and visited frequently for 30 more years).

I picked up smoking around age 13 and the Marlboro Man along with Joe Camel sure seemed pretty cool, along with all the sweeptstakes stuff like camping gear, knives, flashlights and jackets I would find rummaging thru boxes in the garage.

Makes my chest hurt for all the damage and death that this and other greedy ad campaigns have caused

...what sort of world is it where we have to spend so much time correcting big business propaganda that places profit over peoples health???

This isn't about cigarette ads.  I dont even think they even exist today.

This is about a good looking man/men from the 1950s to 1990s.

Lets not get off topic talking about cigarettes and cancer...

It's hardly off topic - apparently over 70% of them died from lung diseases, including cancer, caused by the cigarettes they smoked for the campaign.

I do remember having this book as a child.

This is the guy from the photo in the first post - Another Marlboro man dies from smoking-related disease

If you're going to remember the Marlboro men, it rather behoves us to remember what they were all about and the lessons we can learn from them.

I remember those ad campaigns!  Seems like just yesterday they were in all major print and TV shows across the country (world?).

I'll take your word Anne, for his good looks!

Peace

I'm sure there are many good looking men from the 50's to 90's...I married one  there must be others

I personally can't get past the cigarette in his mouth and the horrid ad campaign associated with that photo to see him as handsome.

Maybe we don't want to give that brand cigarette any air time?
Could just mention handsome men in advertising maybe?

I'm doing laundry! Look how clean this tiny ad is:
