Just found this website and it is exactly what I've been looking for! My husband was willed about 10 aces of farmland recently, so we moved back to Michigan and are building a house on the property now. I have so many plans for this land but am so overwhelmed on where to start, so this forum is perfect for me. Looking forward to building some hugelkultur beds as soon as we move in, then fencing off duck runs and goat pastures. We are excited to contribute to the community by growing sustainable food in an area dominated by corn and soybean. Looking forward to seeing everyone's projects and posts. Happy homesteading!

Hi Seth,
Welcome to Permies and good luck on your venture. We love pictures, so maybe take some pictures as you go and start a thread about your project. If you get stuck there are many here to give advice, and it can also help inspire others.

Hi Seth;
Welcome to Permies!
A friendly happy place loaded with information and nice people!
It gets cold in Michigan, so you might want to learn about Rocket Mass Heaters.
Please pop on over to the RMH forum and read all about them.

If there is any older woodland or meadow on the property that has been relatively undisturbed, be sure to devote some time to observation and plant/animal ID before doing anything dramatic with it.  More than once I have gone onto a site for a design consultation and come across a rare or even endangered plant growing right where some development was planned.  This has even happened in suburban settings!  Sometimes these plants are ephemerals, only appearing for a short time of the year (usually in the spring) and then disappearing for the rest of the year.  This is true for some of the best edible mushrooms as well.

Michigan is so diverse, out of curiosity, are you in the light sandy ground area of the west side, heavy lake effect snow in the north area,  brushy land in the middle or farm country scattered about.

Just wondering, and have fun in your new endeavor.
