It does seem that, based on the historically available foods, sugar would have been in short supply, carbs next because they were fed to livestock, whereas meat and dairy would not have been.
President Eisenhower's heart attack started the low fat diet in 1955 and so the simple question may be: Are we as a nation healthier now, with a high carb and sugar diet, than we were then?
