Here we keep mallards for eggs. We used to have 2 drakes and 7 ducks, but a coyote got into the pen and we were left with 1 drake and 1 duck. Last spring we added 2 more ducks, so our drake has 3 ducks which is a good balance. If one of the ducks becomes broody this year, we are probably going to let her have the babies she wants.
We also buy 15 Peking ducklings a year, that we raise for meat. I also want geese and turkeys, but my husband says we don’t have the room. Once the kids have moved out we won’t need so many chicken eggs. We can then keep a smaller flock and add turkeys and geese.
I am actually a little bummed. I had 36 duck eggs in my freeze dryer, when the pump broke and ruined it all. It sucks, but at least the company that sold it to us, are sending us a refurbished pump.
Here are some pictures.
