Let's say I have a dissenting opinion about a very dogmatic post. The goal of said dissention is that when my kids look through this site, they get to see a variety of opinions.

How should I go about replying so that my post is not deleted or receives apple cores. I have an example in mind, you probably know....

This is assuming that threads should not be echo chambers.

Hi Josh, I hope I might be able to assist even though I'm unfamiliar with your example.

Debate vs Sharing

Fact

Leaving room for other's ideas

A further complication would be that it is in the cider press.

Publishing standards focus on how something is said more than what.  Most people find it difficult to share a conflicting point of view without bringing conflict into it.

Ah, cider press.

To get in there, one has to earn apples and have pie.  Publishing standards are even stricter.  Paul says it better here https://permies.com/t/137686/apple-cores-apparently-annoyed-staff

If I have a very dissenting opinion about a topic I usually just move on.   I would rather spend my time gardening than trying to convince someone to change their mind or see things my way.

Hi Samantha. I am assuming that you came to understand your gardening style by reading through a lot of different opinions on gardening and you decided to try one.

I assume the availability of these different opinions helped to inform you decision.

A dissenting opinion does not need to be motivated by changing someone's mind. It may be motivated by displaying the spectrum of opinion on a subject. To offer a differing opinion is not necessarily an attempt to change someone's mind. I think our culture may try to inform us that is the case but I don't think so.

My worldview influences even my gardening. That is to say that it is not compartmentalized. I can't separate it from my my understanding of how I should exist and interact with the environment around me.

I had a quick glance at the post in question.  The links Timothy give are spot on.  Paul says it better than I can.

The choice of words of that post are especially heavy on the not leaving room for other people's opinions.

Understood.

I know you all have a challenging job to discern through these things. The feedback is very helpful and helps me understand how to post on here. I wish you all were at our dinner table or we were at yours. In person makes things a little easier but in person limits the experiences to the local population. Quite a dilemma I am afraid.

If any of you wonderful folks, even those I have a dissenting opinion with, are ever in central MS. Let us show you some hospitality.

Josh,
Your thinking, quoted below, is very central to the approach to life by many of us...well said.
It's just that there are numerous varying worldviews represented here at this site.

My worldview influences even my gardening. That is to say that it is not compartmentalized. I can't separate it from my my understanding of how I should exist and interact with the environment around me.

I'm fairly certain I know the Cider Press thread you are wanting to post in and I would welcome your view

Sometimes it is where the post is as well as what is said that is relevant. If the subject is about birthday parties and wrapping presents and you want to make a point about consumer buying habits, it might not be the right thread for that.
This thread is probably relevant. It may be we can discuss consumer habits in a different thread quite amicably (or not!)

I like this one

"I disagree" vs. "I have a different position"

https://permies.com/t/100020/disagree-position

I think all of this really boils down to perceived subtext.  Some people write in a way that is clearly loaded to the gills with hostile subtext.  And they wanna defend what they wrote as "I never said anything wrong."  And I just wanna say "meh, I don't feel like publishing it."

The core of it all is:

I wanna talk about things I think are cool in a way that I think is lovely

The only rule is "be nice" and I, alone, will interpret what that means.  And I reserve the right to be nuttier than squirrel poop.

These days, enough precedent has been set that there is rarely a problem.  In fact, the staff have private discussions about tiny nuances - which is so delightful compared to the first few years.

All of us having this conversation now about "dissenting opinion" vs "my position is different" is quite heartwarming.
