I'm trying to explain what permaculture is in one sentence.

This is the best I've come up with:

Permaculture shows people how to improve their their lives and solve problems globally locally, and personally based on effective principles and processes found in nature.

I need to be able to quickly tell people who have never heard what permaculture is before what it's all about for our Online Permaculture Design Course Kickstarter Project.

I like it Zach, but it still references 12 "unknown" principles which means it is still vague to new people.

I'm in the foothills of the San Pedro Mountains in northern New Mexico--at 7600' with about 15" of precipitation, zone 4b historically--growing vegetables for the local farmer's market, working at season-extension, looking to use more permaculture techniques and join with other people around here to start and grow for farmers markets.

Design of any system that results in; less work, less waste, less damage, more yield, and more redundancy.

Or something like that.

My definition... "Permaculture is the act of being an ethical steward of our environment, by purposefully designing efficient ecosystems, while being compassionate to our neighbors."

There is something that I do not know, the knowing of which can change EVERYTHING!!!

My definition is:

Permaculture: A philosophy of reducing ongoing inputs.


The wikipedia definition for philosophy is currently "the study of general and fundamental problems" which seems to be of appropriate scope for permaculture. The words "reducing" is used instead of "eliminating" or "sustainable" as a recognition that permaculture is more of a process than a destination. It is also a recognition that nothing is sustainable and some inputs will always be needed. "Ongoing inputs" should not be confused with "initial inputs" or "start-up inputs" as permaculture systems often require substantial start-up inputs in order to decrease the ongoing inputs that regularly occur once a system has reached maturity.
