I've heard that keeping an eye on your urine colour can tell you a great deal about the state of your health. I had a bit of a scare last year when my urine went very dark like blood staining, but only one time with no other symptoms so I never took it further. What sort of colour should healthy urine be, and what sort of changes are not normal and should be checked out?

Professionally, I train a safety segment every year on heat exhaustion that turns into a conversation about how to measure your body's own conditions. Urine can be a great laymen indicator for both your body's hydration level and health.

Urine that is brown, cloudy, or red can indicate that something is going on with the body medically. Liver issues, urinary tract infection, or something else could exist. The amount of times you urinate could indicate either a medical issue or tip you off that you might be consuming too much caffeine.

If I eat a ton of beet root it'll turn my pee red until flushed out. Mine is usually on the over-hydrated end of Tim's spectrum but my blood-electrolytes tests are all fine so I don't worry about it.

i think the beet thing varies by person, because i can see a difference even if i only have a spoon's worth of grated beets on my salad!!
keep in mind that supplements (including sprinkling brewer's or nutritional yeast) on your food can sometimes give you bright colors in your urine, even if you're super hydrated.

besides color, murky or cloudy urine can indicate UTIs.

To me the color of urine tells me how much water I have been drinking.  I like my urine to be the over-hydrated or good on the chart Timothy posted.

I do not think that I have ever been over-hydrated.

I do not drink anywhere close to the recommended amounts.

Usually when I have lab work the person writes that my urine is Straw colored.

By the way ever though my urine is like colored my lab work says I am dehydrated.

My advise is for folks to drink lots of water especially if the color of urine is a concern.

By coincidence there was an article in one of the national papers this week (Daily Express if you're interested) about standardising colour charts for clinical diagnosis. This is the one for urine - a fair rainbow! - although they don't give diagnosis against the colours.

I can tell you, when one was #7B471C, the GP said it was the worst urine sample they'd ever seen, and diagnosed a kidney infection successfully treated with strong antibiotics!

It all depends on hydration levels, and what you eat and drink or supplements you take. I wouldn't get too worried about a short term change.  A long term change, not related to intake or hydration would concern me.

If I'd had more time, I would have written a shorter letter. -T.S. Eliot such a short, tiny ad:
