My driveway runs in a NW direction from my house. It is the dividing line between zones 6a and 6b. It is more shaded than not, but it does pick up some direct sun.. especially toward evening. To guess, probably 4 hours in the summer. The soil is generally clay, though there is some loamy top soil. Lilac bushed grew well in this area.
I am looking for suggestions for berry bushes to plant along the driveway.
I think blackberries or black raspberries could fruit well there, and the best blackberries tend to be in part shade. Maybe barberry too? Currant? Pokeweed might grow well too... milkweed, nettles... but those aren't berries. Thimbleberries also.
Aronia and Juneberry?.... Both doing well outside of Fargo, North Dakota with high water table and heavy clay. Aronias are least attacked by predators, are a fall-bearing species, but not good for fresh eating. Makes tasty and healthy jam/jelly. Juneberries yield in accordance with their name, are heavily predated by waxwings, robins, and jays, but are a good blueberry substitute for non-acid soils, even if not as strongly flavored. For driveway, Aronia has very colorful fall foliage.
Haskap should do well for you. You do have to net them however, if you want fruit. They are early enough that the birds will clean you out.
Black raspberry is also good. I had ones in a very similar place and got good production.
I would say blackcurrants, they do okay with a bit of shade. No experience with clay soil, so I have no idea how well they'd manage that. Otherwise, maybe goumi?
i have many currants, gooseberry, cane fruit, juneberry, aronia, hazelnuts , honeyberries etc all growing on rocky clay soil in my yard. some are heavily shaded after 230pm. and produce fine. my grapes are the only thing that isnt fond of shade.
