This eBay salve of comfrey and myrrh... WOW!!! Helps with my bad knee, and removed a mole!

Back in Oct, I dislocated my knee - popped out sideways… major ACL damage.  Each evening, I massage it with a comfrey salve.  The knee is improving slowly.  I do qigong... still stiff and a little weak, but better.  However, after applying the salve to my knee, I always rubbed the excess into a large-ish, grey mole on my forearm, which came from sun damage.  I noticed the mole getting smaller and lighter.  THE WHOLE THING JUST SLOUGHED OFF!!!  Basically, I thought it was the beginnings of skin cancer... been there for about 10 years, gradually darkening and growing- now, it is gone!!!

What is in that recipe!  Thank you for sharing and congrats on loosing that grey mole!

I wish I had made the salve!  I usually do.  But, this time, I just saw one on ebay - a home made salve, low cost and supper simple.  It was just petroleum jelly based, with comfrey and a bit myrrh.  It came in a repurposed, large, Vaseline jar.  I usually don't use petroleum jelly... but I was absolutely crippled... and it cost $4.  The ingredients were simply, the base (Vaseline), dried and powdered comfrey and myrrh.

My neighbor his knee is in a bad way as well, he just keeps farming though and doesn't trust a doctor, who he calls butchers. If he is standing around his knee can snap and just go forward like if walking, it's making cracking sounds. I've given him some jelly i obtained, massage pferdesalbe ,Germans use it on their running horses, chokeful of herbs. Comfrey indeed being one of the ingredients. Four days later he reported it's stopped making horrible noises and feels a lot better.
Comfrey regenerates skin cells so i guess that happened to your brown spot.
When applied on wounds make sure the wound is thoroughly clean, because it can close overnight with the dirt in it. Some herbal healers advice not to use it on wounds because the risk of unsaturated pyrolizidine alkaloids entering the bloodstream is very real, bad for liver and carcinogenic.
It's a very powerful regenerator of cartilage.

Of course, the skeptic in me wonders if simply applying plain vaseline to the mole would have produced the same results. Got any more moles so you can do a control?

John, two third of modern medicine derives from plants. People have evolved using plant medicine for thousands of years. Now we have better scientific tests to test herbal medicine for effieciency, but the pharmaceutical industry won't support this, neither will the government, can't tax plants. So there is a lot to still be learned and a lot of confusion, but so is there in modern medicine. Hypericum perforatum is scientifically proven to work and in Germany the most described anti-depressant 50%, Prozac 2%.

Yep, and modern medicine has been systematically investigating the medical efficacy of plants for as long as medical science has been around. If it can be turned into a drug then it has or will be. The idea that "you can't tax plants" has no bearing on this - when the pharmaceutical industry identifies that active components they synthesise these compounds and work out active doses and the like to maximise medicinal benefits and minimise side effects.

For example, poppy seeds when consumed can cause false positive when a person is tested for opioids. BUT there is a huge variability between individual poppy seeds. The concentration of active components can vary 100 fold from seed to seed. The medical industry is all about reducing and controlling that variability.

John I agree that any product we use should be control tested :)   As an aside, in the last several years I've tried to eliminate any petroleum related ingredients/products from my world (virtually impossible).   But I wonder if the vaseline I used to remove eye makeup for the previous 40 years is the reason I have no crows feet at 64 !!! ???  But I digress.

Comfrey salve made with beeswax is the best option and there are tons of people selling it on Etsy and elsewhere online.  (luckily I can make my own - I buy beeswax pellets online to melt with my homegrown comfrey leaf - how to's abound on Youtube)

I have been growing the amazing comfrey plant for over 30 years, mainly as a permaculture crop & over the last few years making salves for myself & friends ! I dig the root after a good hard frost , that is when all the goods from the above part shifts to the root zone , clean & put in blender with organic castor oil, which I buy by the gallon, & grind these together & leave set in glass jar for several weeks at least for the comfrey to release in the oils, then strain off & combine with beeswax to make a great salve !  Our forefathers brought comfrey plants with them from Europe, generations ago, that was the medicine plant & the FDA spread spread fear about comfrey over the years about comfrey, & yet today I run into people that are afraid to use ANYTHING with comfrey !   Mark Twain said 100 years ago, it is a lot easier to fool people , than convince them they have been fooled, & that is still so true today, Thank Goodness for Permies.com ,

I have been making an herbal ointment for decades that was designed to be used for all sorts of healing on nearly every part of your body. (Not for internal use) I use comfrey leaf and root, calendula,  chamomile,  lavender. Different oils have different properties and olive oil even has its own healing properties.  I use a double boiler method of heating the base oils and whole plant parts for extraction.  Then I bolster that base by adding other oils, essential and cooking oils. Finally I thicken with beeswax that still smells like honey!

Many who have used it claim I should market it. I don't because I don't care to jump through all the regulatory hoops. But its my go-to for all my cuts and scrapes, dry skin, chapped lips, etc.

I look forward to being where I can grow all of my own ingredients,  or nearly all. I'll have to buy a small still to manufacture my own essential oils.

Comfrey is definitely a Wow plant.

I just bought some dried, crushed comfrey to use as a poultice on my wife’s busted ankle, once the staples come out. I was thinking about making a tea and wetting a rag with the tea as a compress, or just making a paste with the leaves and water or olive oil and using that on her ankle. What would you recommend?

I got some Solomon’s Seal too and made a tea that I dose about a teaspoon in her morning coffee each day. I been dosing myself too about as much and notice my joints don’t stiffen up as much when I sit a bit.

The Solomon’s Seal tea is a few roots I grated into a quart jar and filled the jar with water. I keep it in the fridge and draw off it, then add water as I need to. It’s a light syrup now.

I think if you're not going to take the time required to make an ointment with the comfrey, the next best is your paste idea using olive oil. The oil has its own properties of healing that will compliment the comfort, the skin will absorb the benefits of both. Maybe use a bit of muslin to hold what I'm thinking will be something of a politics, and hold that in place with a long strip of cloth wrapped around the whole mess. If she can keep it on for several hours each day for a few days she should be good to go in no time.

I've never really investigated Solomon's seal so I can't offer any pointers there.
