This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEP Curiculum.  Completing this BB is part of getting the straw badge in Homesteading

In this Badge Bit you will learn how to trap(drowning style) those fun loving flies who always want to be your friend and eat with you.  Or fly around when you are trying to read at night.  Better yet play tag near any light source.

Here are some videos for your inspiration:

To complete this BB minimum requirements are:

        - Flies are collected in a drowning style trap
        - About half of a 2 litre pop bottle is collected
        - Must be home made

To document your completion of the BB, provide proof of the following as pics or video (less than two minutes):

        - The fly trap being made
        - The fly trap empty and in its spot where it will be trapping the flies.
        - 1 pint of flies trapped (can be over multiple days)
        - (Optional) Picture showing content humans next to trapped flies :D

Should mention these are good for more than flies simply change the bait.  Fruit flies a juice, yeast and sugar solution works.  Mosquitoes I have had the fruit fly mix really catch them one.  Never did figure out what I did different as no other batch did.  Sugar water solution and a bit of floral essential oil works or citrus juice for wasps.

So, if I want to re-purpose an approx 1 liter plastic container to build the trap, would that disqualify me from the BB? I'm thinking I would still need head space in the container to allow the flies to ingress. That would mean that at best, I would contain about 3/4 liter (24 ounces) of flies... here's a pic of what I am considering.

Thanks!

I think that, as long as you collect the right amount of flies, you'll be okay. You can fill it, snap a picture, and then fill it again and snap a picture, and do that as many times as you need to to catch the right amount of flies, and then post all the pictures.

If you send it by car it's a shipment, but if by ship it's cargo. This tiny ad told me:
