I think 8 pm is good because it gives people a chance to clean up after dinner and be ready for some computer time. Looking forward to the flier and the session on Nov. 14. Stacking functions ... rockin' topic, Ryan. Way cool.

Sorry I missed last night!
I started Windows 10 install on our computer Friday night, it wasn't complete until about 7pm Saturday night. Then I couldn't get it to connect to my WiFi. I did figure out how to get ZOOM on my phone, but then my phone decided I didn't need to hear anything, couldn't get it to work right, so I finally gave up. I did have to call Microsoft Tech to actually get my WiFi to work. At 11 this morning.

Hope you had a great discussion! Now that I got our computer up and running again, I look forward to the next session!!

Hi Larry here from Restoration Farm located outside of Stover MO just 1 /1/2 hours southeast of Kansas City and 40 miles from the Lake of the Ozarks. Hi Natalie,

The Hangout was great! We did have some technical difficulties but managed to get about 40 minutes of conversation done by 4 of us. We spoke a bit about "stacking functions" but mostly just about what each of us was up to. I've been thinking about initiating another but will likely wait until after the holidays.

All,
Looking at the calendar, how does Friday Jan 15th sound for another round of online video chatting? I have another topic in mind to get the conversation going unless someone else would like to volunteer to organize the next one. Either way works for me.

Ryan, Jan. 15 sounds good to me and I say you go for the topic of your choice since you're doing the legwork of getting the hangout organized.

If we use another video conference service, can we pick one that lasts longer than an hour? Just checking. Maybe we go back to Google+ hangouts and not have that limitation.

Look on Facebook for a brother named Dave Hawkins here in Missouri. Tell him I sent you. He's working on building communities in a like manner. He is focused on the Weston Price approach to diet, but he's a good man to know. He's currently finishing his strawbale house, but wants to connect with a group to buy and develop land for a community.

We bought a home that has a little under 2 acres which seems to keep me pretty busy. I've read so much about all the stuff I plan on doing to the place. Now I realize I just need to add a factor of four for the amount of time it takes to get it projects done. We planted a lot of lavender last summer and plan on putting another four or five hundred plants this coming summer. We have been wanting to have a lavender farm after visiting a lot of them in Sequim Washington a few years ago. I'm am lucky in that my soil is the best I've ever seen. I've dug post holes down three feet and it is black loam all the way. A lot different that when I used to grow my garden in mostly clay. The fruit trees went in at the beginning of fall with more to come early spring. I plan on getting some bee's this spring as well which I'm very excited about. Winter project is to build out my greenhouse and of course plan my garden. I'm thinking about doing mostly heirloom varieties with some hybrid varieties as a backup. Last time I did heirloom tomatoes I had terrible luck but it was in a different soil and all my friends had a bad tomato year as well. I'm hoping this year will be different. I'll add updates as things progress and bounce ideas off the group if everyone is OK with that.

Nice, Chris. You are not too far north of me. I'm located about 10 min south of Odessa. Sounds like you've been busy. Its always seems difficult to prioritize what to do first and how much you want to put off before putting in any main-frame design. I had the chance to go down to Nick Ferguson's place for his earthworks course. It was a great time to hang out with some like-minded individuals and Jack from the Survival Podcast, as well. Chris Prater did a class on bee keeping and opened my eyes to some different methods and concepts that I hadn't thought of or just didn't even know.

We've been lucky so far with the mild start to the winter, but keeping all the animals and poultry happy is going to get more difficult soon i'm sure.

Okay, I'm gonna ask when you all might want to attend a rocket-mass heater workshop led by experienced RMH builder and teacher, Jim Schalles. It will be in Kearney, Missouri (just north of Kansas City). He has two weekends available: June 4-5 or June 11-12. I'm not sure what the costs will be, but they will be to cover the teacher's fees and some food. This should be hands on, so expect to be hot and sticky if you want to join. What weekend would work best for most of you?

More info to come on how to access this video chat. BTW anyone who has been able to run a group video chat in google hangouts please let me know. It didn't pan out the last time we tried and we ended up using Zoom which was limiting for time. And spread the word!

KC area folks. Please spread the word!!! I'm working on putting together a bulk purchase of meat chickens for this spring. I know many folks are interested in running some birds for their personal freezer but due to cost and lack of the equipment have avoided doing so. The price per chick drops significantly when buying 100+ birds. I am starting a sign-up list to see how many we need to order (get the bulk price on small quantities)! I will be selling the chicks at cost. I have an entire processing setup available for rent. The whole setup is all portable and fits in any standard truck bed. Kill cones, scalder/burner, plucker machine, stainless steel draining tables for evisceration, and shrinking freezer bags. I rent the entire setup for $50. I know some folks would rather just purchase the bird processed and frozen. I can help with that too, but this offer is for those trying to get started or have limited space to run large numbers of birds. I may even put on a small processing class for any folks interested in that as well. If you or someone you know are interested, shoot me an email or pass it along. I have also built a portable tractor similar to the texas prepper one, but lighter weight which I will be posting a video on my Youtube channel soon. It held up great even through some 50+ mph winds this year.

I really want to help folks in the area out and enable them to put their own food on the table. I may even be working out a deal to purchase feed in bulk as well. If it all works out I will pass that savings along as well. Spring will be here before we know it and March / April is a good time to start your meat chicks. If you are interested in the rental and not the chick purchase, that's great as well.

Three updates ...

1 - We have the time and date for the straw bale construction demonstration at Dave Hawkins' homestead. Dave has been living in his small straw bale house all winter. Come hear about his approach, and why he made certain decisions on how we went about building his structure. Feb. 27, 2 pm at Dave's place just outside Odessa, Missouri. We'll have a map and address for you shortly. This is a FREE event and we can also talk about other things Dave is doing on his unique primitive homestead. More info to come, just save the date.

2 - The rocket mass heater workshop (three-day) is schedule for later in June. This will be hands on and most meals provided. Free on-site camping for the weekend for those who do not live in town. The fee isn't set yet, but it will likely be in the $200 range. We'll look into scholarships if there is a hardship. More info and flier to come.

3 - I finally installed the end walls on my high tunnel this past weekend. I've been busy with our move from Liberty to Kearney so I haven't has much time to finish the high tunnel. We'll be stretching the plastic over it next week. I'll update here. Here are a few photos.

I don't believe I have anything going on the 27th. I'm just south of Odessa about 15min, so I'll try and make it up. So, I guess I'm a bit late to the party. Ken here; I live in Olathe.
This season will be my first full foray into Permaculture; It's just my suburban yard (at least for now), but I'm looking forward to it. I've been watching videos and reading a couple of books so far. I'll be putting in a number of dwarf fruit trees in about a month, with guilds to build out from there.
I saw this forum and wanted to hop on, get in the mix, and say hello.
