Michael, I live in a mobile home park near Elmira, NY. For out-of-staters who don't realize how rural Upstate NY is, I live in the town of Horseheads, village of Big Flats. We are surrounded by forested hills.
My son and I are learning to garden in a shared space up the road. Right by my trailer I've started a medicinal herb garden and a three sisters raised garden bed. We are guerilla planting in the tree line around the park.
We made a tumbler composter and are replacing all the non-edible ornamental landscaping with edibles. Last year we made a rocket stove so I can cook outside in warm weather. This summer I want to set up a water harvesting system and build a slow sand filter. Little by little we are learning, and it's a lot of fun!

I went to college in Potsdam, lived in Auburn for a bit, and the rest of my life in Orange County.

I love upstate New York! I'd stay here forever but after this last winter I think I'm going to look someplace a little warmer to settle down.

Wow! Nice to see people close to home!

I'm in Cobleskill, and soon to be moving (staying close to this area...it's a good school!) but we won't be renting any longer! So I'm diving into the deep end trying to get as much info into my brain as possible so that I can sit and dream and watch the snow fly!

I am in the Oswego area. There is sure some happening stuff in these parts. We are in the planning - soon to be installation - stages of a permaculture living lab on the Oswego campus of the State University of New York.

Might as well poke my nose in here too
I am just east of Binghamton, slowly working on a house I designed 30 years ago and have been living in for 15 or so, on the family property. I built in some passive solar features, then underfloor radiant heating, and a couple of years ago discovered the rocket mass heater which I am building now in the location I had planned for a custom woodstove. Anyone interested in helping and learning firsthand is invited to come out the weekend of October 24-26, 2014. Let me know!

Orange county here. JUST moved onto a property with a little land and am eager to get my homestead going.

Intend to (cooperatively, I hope, but maybe on my own) buy some acreage locally or south (much more likely) of here.

Hello upstate NY'ers,

I am looking for a job in the greater Buffalo area. If anyone knows of a job with a small company or individual who might not have posted to the internet please let me know.

I'm currently in Albuquerque, NM, but have family in the Buffalo area and would like to stay with them for a bit. I have done many things: engineer, research, computer networking, farm help, landscaping, and teaching (non-certified). I would prefer something in sustainability, but I'm flexible.

I am originally from upstate. I grew up around Painted Post / Corning / Caton area. It's so funny to 'run into' people from back home on here. Glad to see people here trying Permies stuff out. It's a beautiful area!

Hi all. My name is Darren. I just moved to Alexandria Bay from the Carthage area. I've downsized after my divorce from just over five and a half acres to one third of an acre. I'm planning to use this property as an example of urban homesteading planting dwarf fruit trees, espelliered fruit trees, grapes, cold hardy kiwi, berries, currants, raised beds, a cob oven, greenhouse and would love to rip out all of the landscaping in the front and plant an entirely edible landscaping design. I would love to have chickens and one or two bee hives but not sure if they are allowed in my area. I would love to have advice from people in the area trained in permiculture design and others in the area experienced in these types of projects.

Hi Folks,

I'm not currently located in Upstate NY, but in September/October, my wife and I are moving to the family homestead in Cherry Valley, NY (around 40 acres - 1 hour west of Albany).

We intend to make the strawbale homestead (that my father built) more resilient, and apply all the fun permie knowledge & experience we've been gathering.

I look forward to networking with people in the region, to garner and share as much knowledge as possible.

What I have done is to identify what I already have and then I would suggest you get yourself a good book or three and look up some guilds.

Hello I am an upstate New Yorker! (Well southern tier)
And I am about to jump into uncharted expermental territories in the cob building world. I will be starting to dig my basement (yes I said basement, stone basement ) for my cob made with pumice instead of sand house in 4 weeks. If any one is interested in why I am doing this unconventional build, or would like to come and learn with me as I do it please reply here. (If that is OK with the powers that be). I have made models and many bricks, done research for 3 years and read permies religiously. I have 1.5 acres abutting my families 300 acre farm/woodland in Chemung NY.
And I am SO EXCITED TO DO THIS.

Sheila and Suzanne : I recently became aware of these people ( in Ithaca /Thompsons County ) Finger Lakes Re-Use They not only recycle every thing

Well almost everything. They do deconstruction of whole buildings for salvage and take and sell donations like Habitat for Humanities Re-Stores

Hi Jessica.  Welcome.  Hope you get as much out of this permies site as I have over the years.  I sure wish it was available 50 years ago when I had access to some wonderful land.

Still, I learn something new almost daily from the generous sharing of folks on this site, mostly gardening, energy efficiency, and food storage. The conjoined ideas of permaculture and prepping have served me and my family well over the years.

I know its an old thread and probably bad form to bump it way to the top, but i decided to stop lurking and make an acct.

My wife and I are working on finishing up building our house in Sloansville, NY.  Small house we have built 100% ourselves whenever we arwnt at work. Around thr homestead we are in the process of planting an orchard a little every year, growing a garden, raising chickens and ducks for eggs and will hopefully be raising some meat animals next year in our free time now that the big house projects are wrapping up.

Anyone else in thr Cobleskill area that is active or a lurker like me?

Thanks for making that map, that's very helpful!  My spiritual community has land in Cherry Plain.  EastCoastVillage.org.  We are looking to build our community, including and especially connecting with our neighbors to find out where me can be of service locally.  

Our group is dedicated to learning, sharing, and practicing indigenous ritual healing spirit technologies of the Dagara tribe of West Africa as taught to us by Elder Malidoma Some.  We've had the land there since 2003.  The spiritual beliefs of the Dagara are centered on the Earth spirit.  "Read the book of nature" is a direct quote from Malidoma as well as from Sepp Holzer.

There are possibilities the land could be used for permaculture workshops, aquaculture, mushroom growing, or, less easily, fruit or nut cultivation.
