getting cooking oil stains out of clothing?

Hey all,

With all the wonderful cooking we do, I often get oil stains on my clothes. Anyone know a trick for getting rid of them? Thanks!

I haven't found a good way to do that.  I worked in a local deli for a few years and it seemed unavoidable. 

The only solution I found was an apron haha.

Dawn Soap applied to the oil stain sometimes works. 

If the oil stain is fresh and not set, sometimes a soak in water and amonia will get it out.

As a mechanic and a printing press operator before that I have a lot of experience with this.
GoJo or Goop hand cleaner works the best. Apply it to the stain on both sides before washing. Works every time.

I use this on work shirts that don't have much value so if the stain is on expensive clothing try it on something of little value first. Hope it helps.

I know this is an older post, but "they say" throwing a can of coca-cola in the wash does the trick

Make use of lime juice. Use vinegar or petrol if the color of the fabric isn't too bright. Organic clothing is good against oil stains.

Powdered clay or clay dust is amazing for getting oil out of clothing.

For best results, apply as soon as possible, do not wash clothing first, pat clay power gently onto stain, do not rub, leave overnight. Next day, shake off clay.  Do not rub.  Repeat on other side of cloth if any oil remains.  Wash as per normal.

Wash it with a residue free automotive cleaner.  Personally I prefer premium ether.  Then wash that out with Dawn and finally wash with normal detergent.

Country oriented nerd with primary interests in alternate energy in particular solar. Dabble in gardening, trees, cob, soil building and a host of others.

I use bath soap though I bet homemade soap would be great for getting out oil stains.  

I rub in in several times and keep refreshing the soap until the stain is gone.

I've always used the same procedure as r ranson described, but using corn starch(cornflour) or arrowroot powder. Chalk will also work, so I usually try to keep a piece of chalk in my edc (every day carry), so I can hit grease stains, even if I'm away from home.

You won't see a lady in this area (yes - only women do this) who doesn't have 2 pinafores- 1 being worn ALWAYS, one in the wash. If you were wondering, the men all wear overalls and are invariably covered in all kinds of poo. I prefer the odd oil stain on my pinny.
The local markets all have pinny stalls and they are the ugliest looking things you can imagine, but they do the job. Prevention is better that cure.
P.s. on top you must wear the most hideous cardigan you can find. It's the law.
