If you want to quote someone further up in the thread, start by hitting the "quote" button in their post.  It will start a reply for you with their full post quoted.  If they had quoted someone else, you'll see multiple "quote" and "/quote" symbols.

If you want to grab some words from somewhere else in the world, just start a post and hit the "quote" button.  It will give you the fancy quote codewords and you can just cut and paste the words you want in between the quote words.  Like this:

It's always darkest before it goes pitch black

Thanks Mike. At least I know that I'm technically doing it right.
When I cut and paste into the 'quote' boxes, somehow everything after the last parenthesis are in the pale coloured field too, as happened in the original post on this thread. It's always done this for me.  huh.

Or you can type [ quote] to open the quote and then [ /quote] to close it, remove the spaces I put in before quote and /quote.

It looks like in your top post you may have pasted the quote in front of the [ for the "end quote" text block.  So maybe you clicked a bit to the right of where you should've?

@ Chris Sturgeon: Please try a couple more quotes here and lets be sure we've got this one working? I totally get how some of this stuff seems like magic when other's get it to work when I can't and since I've got a reputation for being able to turn any cell phone handed to me into a brick, I'd like to know for sure that we've got this fixed! Of course, anyone else is welcome to play with the two quote buttons (one you use *before* you press the "Post Reply" button and which sort of replaces it, and the other shows up at the top of your reply as the window opens). Both buttons have their uses, but I exclusively used the "inside the reply" window one for years and didn't understand how the other one worked. Pushing buttons is pretty scary for me - although I'm improving!

The above miss-quote is from the within-the-window button push

The broccoli says, "I am a small tree!". The mushroom says, " I am a tiny umbrella.". The walnut says, "I am a minuscule brain!". The banana says, "I want to change the subject.".

And the above is from the 'outside universe': This part should not be in a box.

To avoid pasting in the wrong place, you can also highlight any text you have already written or pasted into the reply window and hit the quote button. This will put the highlighted text in quotes like this:

highlighted and pressed quote button

The advantage of using the quote button above someone else's (or your own) post is that it automatically adds the name of the person you are quoting. Like this:

Horray! It seems to have worked; or rather, I didn't mess it up this time.

Thank you all for your patience with my less than tech savvy self.
