Selling Greenwood to PEP and PEA folks

As development of the PEA aspect of the PEP Program has been moving forward, one difficulty came up. Scouring the internet for a means of obtaining greenwood without leaving an apartment building has proven to be more or less impossible. Without greenwood, nothing quite fits that correct skill set for the Roundwood Badge. With a bit of discussion and thought, it became clear that (to the shock of no one) the problem was the solution.

In the Commerce Badge, individuals are being asked to apply themselves to earning money online and through permaculture labor. Doubtlessly there are many blessed with land who would find it incredibly easy to cut sized pieces of greenwood as they tend to their land and send them to those who need them. For the cost of shipping and a small fee, this would provide greenwood to those who otherwise have no access to work on Roundwood Badge and also provides the sender with a clear means of earning a small amount to put towards their Commerce Badge.

As such, I decided to create this post for people willing to offer to fulfill this service by those who may be in need. Once the PEA badge bits are added, I will link this post to the relevant bits involving greenwood so that those aspiring to complete them will have a quick way to locate those who wish to offer their services.

That's ingenious! I had a thought about doing it backwards--maybe a sister thread? Or maybe this one thread for both, or would that be confusing? Some people may not be cutting wood all the time, or may have a single clearing project to do, or get a chipdrop with trees every once in a while. I was thinking a thread where people who want green wood could post it, and anyone who had some at the moment could contact them. It might save some runaround from people chasing after others who may not have some at that moment, and then have to PM back and forth, and for staff to have to keep updating the list of people selling so often.

I always have small amounts of wood I can cut and send out for mallets, spoons etc but I doubt I would notice people asking for it if it were in the bb area as I tend to just ignore those threads when they come up on the recent threads list.

My only worry with a second thread would be that of the watch system. When someone comments on a thread, it automatically sets for them to be watching it. If they get emails of watches, it will notify them directly in email. However, with a second thread for seekers, the people already making offers here wouldn't necessarily be watching that thread. Perhaps a slight change to the name of this thread to make it clear that people seeking could also comment here and that way it would reach both those who'd already offered as well as those who hadn't yet made any offers?

Absolutely. I made a point of making this its own thread to be linked back so that it isn't just another BB post that people might miss in the sea of other BBs. My thinking was that having it stand alone would draw more seekers and sellers at the same time.

Mike Haasl and Paul came up with this useful tidbit:

Birch decorative fireplace logs can be purchased due to the fact that birch is very slow to fully dry. While the cut ends may be dried, there is a solid chance that the interior of the logs may remain green for the purposes of carving.

I think I could supply chunks of birch logs to people on demand for their mallets.  The birch I cut isn't on my land so I have to make arrangements each time I go there.  Maybe a monthly order fulfillment would be about right.  For starters I'm thinking I'd charge $20 plus shipping for a big enough hunk to make a compound mallet from.  I could also supply wood for spoons and other projects.  I think the mallet is the only one that needs green wood but the other projects could be easier if the wood is green.
