I've noticed a couple of times that people have submitted for approval of BB5, 10, & 20 but I am unable to do the verification. I assume this is because I got those badges before the new 'submit for certification' feature. I can verify BB40 posts, which I did achieve under the new system. Is there a behind the scenes way to tweak this?
Here are my posts for BB10 & BB20 in case it helps. Looks like I didn't have a BB5 post.

I'm thinking this might be because the BB5/10/20/etc badges aren't set up the same way as the PEP aspects. When we add a new Badge Bit, we staff have a little button to add it to an aspect...but the BB10/20/etc don't have an "aspect." Because they don't have an "aspect," they don't have the little periwinkle/grey box to certify them. When I go to certify a BB5/10/20/etc, I have to manually make a staff note, and then manually add the badge.

I don't know if there's anyway to fix this without having our programmer set up special instances for the BB5/10/20/etc certification. Those are like asking for a Sand or Straw Badge...I think right now, only staff can certify and grant a badge above the Air badge (Air badges are added automatically when someone has their first BB certified in an aspect.)

How long should it take to get a response to a BB submission? I thought I heard Paul say in a podcast within 48 hours - is that reasonable? I've submitted a BB recently and I'm waiting (somewhat patiently) for a review/ response.

If it obviously fulfills the requirements,  48 hours is the norm.

For edge cases, it usually takes significantly longer.

It also depends on just how many BBs there are to certify. Right now, I can see a big list of 16. Since BBs are certified by volunteers, sometimes it just takes time for volunteers to get through all of the BBs. Once you have a Sand badge in a given BB, you can help certify the BBs you've earned in that badge, too!

I also know a lot of people who are participating in Armistice Day events or visiting family this weekend (remembrance day here in Canada).

Long weekends can mean more people online avoiding family or fewer people online because of events.
