Candle wicks are hard! Apparently, you need different size wicks for different widths of candles. Additionally, different types of wax burn at different rates, and so need thinner or wider wicks. I had some wicks that came with a rolled beeswax candle set we got for our kids. These wicks worked great for tapers, but they didn't burn fast
enough for the thicker pillar candle.
Anyway, long story short, you might have gotten perfectly fine wicks for a certain size and type of candle. And the other people might have been using the right type of wax and right shape of candle for that wick. Perhaps they were making paraffin wax candles, while you were making beeswax; beeswax burns slower than paraffin, so it just didn't work out.
Anyway, I sadly don't have an
answer for you, but there were some good answers in the
thread where I
asked "Best place to buy cotton wicks for beeswax candles?" These answers might not help you, though, if you're making candles out of a different wax!
